Have the first details regarding the Star Wars live-action television show (codenamed Star Wars: Underworld) begun emerging?
Take this with a grain of salt, but Ain’t It Cool News is reporting that one of the first plot points in the television show will hinge around… time travel! This is a conventional science-fiction plot point that hasn’t seen much play in the Star Wars Expanded Universe, but has been utilized more in recent years with books like Riptide. For more details, read on!
From AICN:
“Daniel tells us that one of the series’ first episodes will involve a group of bandits acquiring the capability of time travel, and using it to travel back in time to stop Darth Vader from ever existing. This is certainly in keeping with past indications we’ve heard about the show – that it would involve the “darker” side of the STAR WARS universe, criminal factions, Empire building, etc. While “time travel” is relatively new to the film and television canon of the STAR WARS universe, it’s a factor that has at least been acknowledge/discussed in the franchise’s “Extended Universe” (details HERE). As such, its potential inclusion in this show is not as remarkable as one might initially believe.”
We should note that AICN points out that this news is from an untested source, but AICN also has a good track record of running information that turns out to be true.
So what do you think, fans? Do you like the idea of time travel? Does going back in time to stop Darth Vader seem ludicrous? Let us know!

Love Star Wars, but that sounds like a horrible show idea.
Time travel in Star Wars is something I do NOT want to see. I made a slight exception for Crosscurrent, don’t think I can bend anymore.
Time travel is great if it’s taken seriously as a way to explore a moral or philosophical dilemma. It’s lousy though as a way to generate a false feeling of suspense (we all know Darth Vader isn’t going to be wiped from the Star Wars history).
I hope the show focuses on character development rather than blasé action. I’ve been disappointed in Clone Wars for precisely that reason.
That supposed plot doesn’t make sense to me on a number of levels. Time travel is a storytelling hand grenade that can blow up in your face pretty easily. The whole “going back in time to kill Hitler” idea isn’t exactly groundbreaking and doesn’t really fit with what Rick McCallum has said about the show. Doesn’t make sense that Vader would take a central role in the plot.
I think AICN got taken on this one.
Actually, I think it could fit in well. The source never says that Vader plays a central role – just that it involves bandits going back in time to stop Vader from existing. Vader could easily never appear, and these guys could have all sorts of problems and run-ins with Imperials (“the law”), while still keeping the theme of the Underworld.
It seems far-fetched, but think about it. Darth Maul having a brother? Those stupid changes to the Star Wars Blu Ray collection? They were real. This definitely fits in with the rest of those ideas.
REALLY!……..REALLY! If this turns out to be true then I’m done with Star Wars! So tired of disappointment. IMO the EU is better than GL’s vision.
@Chris: Yeah, Maul having a brother was far-fetched. So stupid, how can anybody have a brother in the SW universe.
You have some valid arguments, but I see a contradiction there. First you mention the idea of time travel could fit in well, but then you mention it also fits in with some (in your opinion, not everyone’s) stupid ideas.
Personally, I think the idea of time travel in a live action SW series could be cool, if executed well. It could even become the American version of Doctor Who!
Horrible idea… this is probably just being put out to make even more changes to the EU than they already have and to legitimize all the crap that’s coming from the new CW show explaining that the EU we all love is just in another “alternate reality”. GL has a control issue since all these fantastic authors are getting the spotlight for great novels and no one was looking his way.So he steps on the EU to ruin it saying look at me! Time to retire GL cause I didn’t buy the blu-ray and I’m sure not going to support the 3D. What I will support is the REAL EU in all its glory and not all the recons that will eventually take place.
It is an interesting possibility, I really enjoyed “Crosscurrent” and it’s idea of time travel although that was future in time instead of back in time, perhaps not the best idea for a Star Wars TV series but it should be interesting to see so hopefully George Lucas and Rick McCallum will not let us down.
