Today is the start of EUCantina’s Summer for Children’s Literacy program, an effort to raise funds and awareness for childhood literacy over a two-month span. We kicked things off this morning by introducing our donate button on the sidebar – this is the most important part of our program! Please consider donating to help children’s literacy by using the button on the right. All donations go to Reading is Fundamental, the largest nonprofit children’s literacy foundation in the United States.
From today through September 12, EUCantina will publish special content that raises awareness for the important needs in the lives of children lacking literacy resources and knowledge that is fundamental to their growth. A special article detailing the statistical reality of their situation will be posted this month. Later on in the program, Star Wars writers (including Jason Fry, Sean Williams, Maya Bohnhoff, Michael Stackpole, and Pablo Hidalgo) and other Star Wars fansites will contribute to two articles that discuss reading on a personal level. That’s just a small part of the literacy-focused content that will be released.
EUCantina will also host several contests featuring prizes donated by Del Rey and the official Star Wars Books Facebook page. Our first contest will take place for the duration of the program. The EUCantina Summer Reading Club starts today, and offers a chance to read Star Wars books in order to win our grand prize for the program. The prize features two signed Star Wars novels and a copy of The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia, with a bookplate signed by all seven authors who worked on this massive three-volume set.
Two other contests will give participants a chance to show their creative sides and use their writing talents to win signed Star Wars novels. More opportunities to win signed novels will be available through special contests on Twitter and Facebook. Details on these contests will be announced at a later date.
EUCantina will also be selling t-shirts featuring our official A Force for Childhood Literacy logo, with artwork by Joe Hogan (above). All profit made by EUCantina from the sales will be donated to Reading is Fundamental. Those attending Star Wars Celebration VI in Orlando, Florida this August will have a chance to participate in a great show of support for children’s literacy through these shirts (more information on that soon).
Those are some of the big ways that we’ll be supporting children’s literacy this summer – and we haven’t even mentioned the grand finale!
Please spread the word about our events and content, consider donating through Paypal or by purchasing a t-shirt, and show your support for children’s literacy efforts this summer!
