Lucasfilm has announced an exclusive deal with Target to release an 88-minute Director’s Cut of the return of Darth Maul on September 11 for $11.99. The DVD box set will feature the last four episodes of The Clone Wars Season Four, in which the legendary Darth Maul finally makes his return.
The full Season Four box set won’t be released until October 23, so the September 11 release of this Director’s Cut is the perfect opportunity to catch up on the events of last season before the explosive Season Five premiere on September 29, which picks up where Season Four left off. EUCantina had the opportunity to view the premiere at Star Wars Celebration VI, and we were very impressed.

I just finished watching Darth Maul Returns, and it is superb. The four episodes play like a movie, uncut, which gives it a cinematic flow. The directing, editing and music seamlessly blend to make this feel like a fast-paced action thriller on par with any Star Wars film. That’s right, I said FILM; the pacing, characterization, especially, and the animation are all the best the Clone Wars has ever looked OR read, by far; the dialogue is minimal and does not suffer even once from being cutesy or expository. Filoni and the gang really showed instead of telling here, and they should all be very proud, and Katie Lucas in particular takes top honors for writing all four episodes. SW fans, if you’re like me and you’d been hoping to see a SW that was a little darker, a little more dramatic and serious minded, with real stakes for the characters and some of the most amazing battle sequences ever seen in any SW media, well, who would’ve thought it would’ve come from a ‘cartoon’? We thought maybe we’d have to wait for the supposed-but-forever delayed live action SW show…well, wait no more. Watch this movie!

TY for this review – I wasn’t sure if I should buy it since I already have S4 on pre-order but it sounds like it is worth it for a TCW fan. Target still has it for sale online only tho and price cut to $10 as of 9/15/12
