The Empire has cornered Dr. Aphra.  Darth Vader can not step in to help her without exposing himself and his plans.  But, she alone has the location of Luke Skywalker and there is nothing that Darth Vader won’t do to get that information.

Darth Vader #12

Inspector Thanoth, Darth Vader’s Imperial adjutant, is a good detective.  It must be obvious to him that Darth Vader is up to something, and now Vader has been forced into a decision.  Do they pursue Aphra or not?  Thanoth seems to be paying close attention to Vader’s reactions here.  However, Vader is intelligent as well, and he has the training of the Sith on his side.

Luckily for Aphra the Empire also got information as to the location of the Plasma Devil’s base.  Initially, I thought the Devils were some kind of pirate group, but they are actually a small group of Rebels acting out of this sector.  Vader convinces Thanoth to divert the Imperial forces towards the Devils and away from Aphra.  Much to Triple Zero’s dismay, Aphra gets to live another day.

Aphra doesn’t get as much of the spotlight as she has had in the last few issues, but we see that even in the face of certain death she maintains loyalty to Vader.  She wants to keep working with him, even beyond just the basic need to stay alive.  She hopes one day to prove to be more than just a single misstep away from death and be a greater asset to him.

Writer Kieron Gillen finds a new way to make Vader even more powerful and intimidating than we initially thought as he literally takes out the Devils single-handedly.  It is pretty cool to see Vader taking out a Y-wing in flight, by himself, on foot, using only his lightsaber.

In the end, Darth Vader manages to keep the secret of Aphra’s involvement safe, get the information about Luke, and outshine his would be replacements.  However, things will not be easy for the Dark Lord as it seems someone else has managed to figure out some of his plans.

Gillen wraps up this current arc solidly.  We get a resolution to the arc, but it’s not so final that we can’t see some of these characters or problems come back later.  Larroca’s art continues at the same level we’ve come to expect.  Simply put, this creative team continues to put out a great book month after month.
