Darth Vader is still leading a campaign against the traitorous Ore Barons of Shu-Torun. They are unhappy with the puppet government that Vader helped the Empire install. The fighting continues using the massive mining machines and tunnels through the planet.
This issue opens with what is believed to be the final battle in the war for control of Shu-Torun. Vader has shown his enemies no quarter and has ruthlessly attempted to stamp out the opposition. However, the Barons seem to have a new ally in Cylo. Cylo will do anything to pull favor away from Vader. Vader is slowly working his way through Cylo’s minions and building to confrontation with the man himself.
Cylo has helped the Barons set a trap for Vader. He sabotaged the controls of his mining drill and led them to where the Barons forces were waiting, far from the rest of the Queen’s forces. Vader’s forces would be overwhelmed, had he not a had a surprise waiting. Thankfully, Vader brought along his commando droids that he built up previously.
Kieron Gillen continues to write good characters, even if I don’t fully enjoy the story his Vader is very well written. Salvador Larroca’s art continues to be the same quality that we have been accustomed to. Although, it is never quite clear if the entire story is meant to be underground or if there are times when they are on the surface. We never see a real sky, but an early splash page doesn’t make it clear either.
It’s no secret that I have not been enjoying this arc very much. This issue is an improvement, it only tenuously feels like Star Wars and the giant drilling machines are still weird, but the story here is stronger than it has been in the previous issues. I like that Vader is prepared and not the least bit surprised that he was sabotaged and lead into a trap. The next issue sets up a confrontation between Vader and the twins, which I am excited to see.
