For almost three years now, Star Wars: Galaxies players have been awaiting the new animation system, which would effectively change the style and look of the “backbone” of the game. Considering I’m not a game developer, I’ll let Matt “AdeptStrain” Boudreaux, a SWG programmer, explain it:

The animation system in SWG is based on skeletal animation. This means the artists set up a series of bones, create animations using those bones (using motion capture or crafting them by hand), and those bones then affect the various character meshes they are actually assigned to.”

For the entire explanation go here to the Development Team Diary and read all about it. Hopefully this will be the start of something great for the game.
