Posted October 23rd, 2009 by Austin

Lucasarts announced this morning that PSP owners, be it a regular or Go, can now download a demo for Battlefront: Elite Squadron via the Playstation Network. We do not, currently, know much about it, but we will be working on getting more information on the demo throughout the day. Let us know what you think of it by commenting on this story.

Ugh, I would love to play it but my PSP battery is broken and I won’t be seeing my friend until tomorrow to get a new one. I have to wait a whole day. :(

I finally got the chance to try it out, and I must say, it’s fun. There’s only one map to try, but you can play either era and any side. There’s now classes again, but you can alter them anyway you like and you even have three bonus slots for your own loadouts.

The space-land thing that they’ve been advertising as “what you do on one affects the other” isn’t too exaggerated, but it all focuses on the ion cannons on the ground and orbital strike cannons in space. If you’re gaining ground you most likely have the ion cannons, if losing the enemy probably has them.

When leaving/entering a capital ship, whether your own or your enemy’s, or entering/leaving the ground battlefront, you’ll be treated with a little animation every time. I’m not sure if this will be a constant annoyance or not, but we’ll see.

Now, boarding ships is actually fun again. There are now hallways and not just three rooms connected to a larger room connected to the hangar. If anything, make the hangars smaller or put more ships in there, it feels like a long walk at the moment. But back to the rooms. Once you get the enemy’s shields down, you can concentrate on getting inside and taking out the generator. Once that is gone, you had better get out fast because that ships is going to blow. It gives you plenty of time to escape, but you can’t fool around when you have a ship about to explode. There are escape pods which head to the ground which will help with escaping.

Now, onto the heroes. Obi-wan, Darth Maul, Boba Fett and for Rebels, Col Serra! Col Serra replaces Han Solo being the hero for Rebels on Tatooine, and I must say it is fun to play as him. He has a better blaster rifle and a better shotgun, which will help in your assault. I raged through the enemy ship guns blazing constantly, only to die after I got to the generator room because I accidentally jumped over a ledge.

Now here is one of my pet peeves, Darth Maul and Col Serra don’t have their own ships, they’re just the default fighter ship, which was disappointing, as Boba Fett and Obi-wan and their customs. However, they do get a default fighter ship upgrade, so they’re not totally screwed in space battles.

Now onto customization. First off, the health/speed/capture speed power ups are a bit more expensive this time, making having level 3 and several good weapons difficult. Many weapons were locked, but it doesn’t look like a good deal was added to the customization. Electro-staff here and a Force pike there, but there are only around 7-8 new weapons, most of which are locked. I hope that the full game will have more weapons then this, as this is barely an upgrade from Renegade Squadron’s customization system.

Overall though, it was fun, with a few disappointments here and there, but never anything overly influencing gameplay. The battleground is never empty, you’d imagine it would be with two battlefronts to play in, but the truth is, you’ll always see somebody, whether it’s an enemy or a friendly. I can’t wait to see multiplayer and the other maps in the game. This game is a big improvement on Renegade Squadron, and I hope they keep the Korriban map…
