Etain Tur-Mukan

I really liked her in the Commando series. Any thoughts?

I liked her well enough. She was actually pretty cool, if irresponsible in areas. *ahem* Her compassion for the clones in general was admirable, but I felt like she got to be a little too much of a bleeding heart at times.

Good in Hard Contact, but the way she died really clouds even the good in the character and her story.

Loved Etain, loved her. I know she had her flaws, but doesn't everybody? Her death, though...left something to be desired. I'm beginning to think Traviss has a little issue with writing deaths. Both Mara's and Etain's weren't so great. I mean, they are deaths, of course. But there is still a way to write them well.

Back to Etain, I can't completely disregard her character just because of her death, though. I instead look back and remember how much I loved her character throughout the rest of that series. Every character, actually. I came to love every character Traviss put in those books, except maybe Hokan or something. Wink

Etain, Jusik, Kal, Walon, Delta, Omega, the Nulls, the Arcs, Corr, Zey, Besany, Laseema, even Mird. She just wrote them in such a way...I grew very attached.

That's why I love Traviss's writing. She makes you feel attached to the characters and builds them up really great. I absolutely loved the Darman-Etain story line, so I found it especially tragic when she was so close to him and just

I thought that a crappy death, just in that all that she had done the previous year or so was specifically to bring her, venku and dar together was ruined in the blink of an eye.

If it comes between my two kids, and stepping in front of instant death to save someone else, my kids win every time.

Now, her dying probably sets up Venku's upbringing(which I seriously hope Dar gets involved in somehow), but I probably would have preferred it anohter way(ship shot down, anything).

I enjoyed how she described her abilities if I can see it I can do so the better it's described to me the better the chances it works.

I also really grew attached to her characters in the RC books. Still don't like the jedi bashing though(in doses and context, sure, not as far as it was taken though).

Yes, you are right. In the RC books, it's more understandable, but still done a bit too much in the books following HC.

I think it was misplaced(or overdone) in the LOTF series.

I really don't mind the Mando overdoing that much. Yes, I admit, it got kind of repetitive in LOTF, but it was her thing and she made it her own, so why not use it as much as you can?

Loved her character, hence the username, and I personally think the death theme, no matter who "bites it", has been a bit over done since NJO's release.

I wish Etain would have had a chance, however brief, to be a real family with Dar and Kad, and downtime during the war doesn't really count.
