I'm going to read it as soon as I'm finished with Dark Tide.

I'm hoping to get my hands on it in the next month. *sigh*

If you get it AFTER some of us have already finished Allies I'm going to giggle. Now understand that this is not a giggle of spite, but rather one that is uncontrollable. Its just a little funny... Wink

Wow. That is getting close. At least I won't have to wait long for Allies when I'm finished Backlash. Smile

My, my, Skuldren, a moderator deliberatley getting off topic. What's this world coming to? *shakes head* Wink

It's of an indie rock band called Eisley. They're all siblings (except their bass play who's their cousin), they were homeschooled, and yes, they are named after Mos Eisley.

Back on topic Very Happy

So what did everyone think specifically of the thing Allston did with the names of the groups on Dathomir during the battle, ie. calling them Shield and Turbo, etc? Personally I didn't mind it as much. It was Ben's idea, and obviously it was also Allston's mind at work. But Ben isn't a general. He didn't fight in the Yuuzhan Vong war. Jacen trained him as a quasi spy, at least Ben really got into the whole spy thing, and he worked as a cop on Coruscant for a while. His background going into battle is that of a spy or security agent. However, I imagine he's been well schooled on how battles go, be it in space or on the ground. So for Ben to feel most comfortable naming the groups Shield and Turbo, I think it doesn't speak so much for his love of space battles or some non-existent familiarity with space combat, but rather simply needing a naming system that was simple, straight forward, and something that came to mind that fit the circumstances.

To be honest, to come up with a better name wouldn't have been easy. Ben isn't going to come up with some names of local animals that are suited to defense and attack, because he's not some expert on Dathomir. He's also not going to use names that the Dathomiri are unfamiliar with. The idea of a shield is something everyone would be familiar with, while the existence of turbolasers would certainly be something the Dathomiri would know by now.

Thus, I was perfectly okay with it. It didn't bother me, and in retrospect, I think it worked well.

I liked that part too. You don't have to be a general to know about space combet (take us for example). It was neat how he used something familiar to him and alien to the Dathomiri to benefit them both.

I agree with most of those points, but especially the pacing. There were parts where it felt like the book had really picked up and then it was back to the slow, crawling parts. As for the series in general, I think it's getting a little cluttered. It started out with Jedi going mad and the GA antagonizing the Jedi. Since then we've got a coup against Jagged Fel, Mandalorians and a freaking planet of Sith. They're already on book 4 on not much has happened. When is it all going to be resolved? In the last book? I sure hope not, because that will make the series pretty lopsided: uneventful at the start and filled to the brim at the end.

Padme, I generally agree with your points. I didn't care for Backlash at all. That said, I think I have the answer to one of your burning questions.

Quote:
As far as I knew, they've been stranded on Kesh for 5,000+ years. So please tell me, how does Vestara, and the rest of the Sith, for that matter, possess detailed information about planets and trade routes and, dare I mention it, piloting a ship?!

Well, Omen makes it clear that the Lost Tribe spent a few years pirating ships with the help of Ship. In fact, I believe the book ends with them having a decent-sized armada. One would assume that the pirated ships would have the information about planets and trade routes - but that's all my answer really is: an assumption. But I think it's one that makes sense.
