What my purpose in that statement was meant as was that the Bible is something that was put together as a moral code for all Christianity. Its something that either needs to all be followed or none of it followed, I don't see it as something you can pick and choose out of.

But why not? each version of the bible the powers at the time picked and chose which apostles and prophets and saints to add to it after all. Laughing

I agree, that the bible is a great moral code though.

@IllogicalRogue

Touche! Very Happy hahaI hadn't considered that. But nonetheless, If you truly believe in God the rules in the bible makes sense as guidelines. I don't think they have to always be followed to the letter, but people have gotten into the habit of picking and choosing from the Bible in order to say that their own vices are ok. Did you know the entire concept of the rapture is nowhere in the bible? Its merely several texts taken and presented without paying attention to the texts around them and reading things into vague statements. Things like that and eliminating the parts that you don't like simply to suit your own lifestyle make me think that if you are going to put merit in it then you should put merit in the whole thing.

As far as the Bible goes, I firmly believe that God gave the words directly to those that wrote them and that He has preserved those words over time. God is all-powerful, so it's certainly not beyond Him to make sure His Word stood the test of time. And I think that's all I have to say on the subject. Smile

I see where your going, And do agree on most parts.

Though I will point out- not all the "pickers and choosers" are doing it just for their own ends. MANY have no idea the whole Bible and thus only take what they DO KNOW of it and in their ignorance look bad for it. But I've always said- in the END it's about EVERY ONES PERSONAL relationship to GOD. God will know if you were trying to be a good person or trying to cheat the system Wink

I could buy into that if things like the dead sea scrolls and other documents keep popping up- which to me "God preserved" for a reason. Then I get perplexed- why would God have man leave that out to just have it re discovered later? So as I've said (for me) I can't see the Bible as a full on "straight from the source" resource. I do think that KNOWING the BIBLE is something everyone should inspire to do. It will make you a better person.

I'll second that.

In my opinion it's better to have a relationship with God than to memorize the Bible. God doesn't want us to worship a book, however, that doesn't demean the value of the lessons and knowledge therein.

It seems that everyone on this site is Christian which is interesting. It would be interesting to have a Muslim or Hindu come in on this discussion. Here's an interesting thought, do any of you believe that the God of Islam, Judaism, and Christianity is the same God?

I would hardly go to say that everyone on this site is a Christian...though there does seem to be a majority that believe in some greater power.

@Anakinlover

Actually I'm not Christian. I'm an agnostic, meaning that I believe there's some higher power and its probably God but as to his function or his limitations or his ability and plan I don't know for sure what to believe. I believe in being thorough though, and that's why I think that if one is going to follow part of the Bible you have to follow the whole thing. I personally keep Sabbath. Not strictly, but I do keep it.

I certainly thing it's all different versions of the same thing. It gets sketchy when we add all these man (writing for God) written word of God that conflict, and cause war and stuff.

But to me there is only one power. I happen to call it God Smile

See and there's something that differs. To me it's always going to be Sunday, but my wife was raised 7th day Adventist, and for her that means Friday at sundown till saturday at sundown. We'd go round and round. (for fun)

Which do we choose? In the end we tried to focus on God everyday, and don't have one day set but take moments as often as we can to say thanks to God and to live right and be better people.

I'm an atheist and yes, I think that the god in those religions is the same one. Wink

What a coincidence, that's the day I keep because that's the faith I was raised in.
