Whoops! Yeah I meant to say starfighters, big difference there, my fault.
As for gunships, I've come to realize that there are two forms of gunships in the Star Wars realm. The first type, which includes the Incom X4's, is a heavily armed and armored ship for taking on fighters, shuttles, and other light vehicles with impunity. They are like the tanks of the battlefield.
Then their are the big gunships, like the Corellian DP20's, which can gang up on capital ships and cruisers.
I thought we would need the two DP20's to protect our carrier. And the flight of three X4's is like an anti-starfighter unit, which could probably also do some damage on slightly bigger vessels too. Size (and firepower) really distinguishes the two apart. An X4 is around 20 to 40 meters (2 laser cannons, 6 laser cannon turrets), a DP20 Corellian Gunship is 120 meters (8 double turbolaser cannons, 6 quad-laser cannons, 4 concussion missile launchers-30 missiles each). Thus three X4's is kind of equivalent to one DP20, which would give us the three in total that we wanted.
Another thought, if we stick with the flight of three X4's, we probably would only need three squadrons of fighters. And if we have three freighters making another flight, we would probably only need two squadrons of starfighters. _________________
