I suppose another way of phrasing the question would be what is your "personal canon," i.e. what stories do you think are essential or otherwise worth reading/experiencing?

A few examples for myself:

The Force Unleashed

I think the story is underrated and Galen Marek/Starkiller is underrated as a character due to the title of the game and the premise of the gameplay, and the accusations of Gary Stu, which I don't think are true... anymore than any other SW protagonist is Gary Stu/Mary Sue. I'm not quite sure why there's so much hate for it, at least at SWTOR and TFN, except maybe because people feel it belittles Vader?

I was listening to the soundtrack for the first time a few months ago, and came across a track titled "Redemption" which was toward the end of the soundtrack, and so I assumed given its title and placement that it was used during the final level, the Death Star, and listening to it, I think the music did a good job of conveying the idea in my head of Starkiller determinedly fighting through the Death Star to redeem himself and save the Rebel Alliance. Starkiller made the Rebel Alliance, the New Republic, the New Jedi Order, all possible through his sacrifice. The first half of this is the second half of Redemption.

Shadows of the Empire

This is basically a Star Wars movie without the movie, having its own novel, comic, soundtrack, videogame, toys, etc. I thought it did a good job filling in between Episode V and VI, and developing Luke and Vader between the two. I liked Dash Rendar.

I'd say I'm pretty much partial toward anything written by Matt Stover, James Luceno, or Michael Reaves. I like the last two hardcovers of the New Jedi Order series and Traitor. I like Dark Empire, but I wish Empire's End wasn't rushed. I like Zahn's first five novels.

I've been enjoying TCW. I think it's at its best with the story arcs like the just concluded Nightsisters arc.

Gold standard? Everything else from Zahn except Allegiance. That's what I tend to compare rest of the EU to.

My gold standard for what a straight up, simple, all around fun and enjoyable book should be is Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor. My standard for what a good trilogy should be is the Thrawn Trilogy. The gold standard for Sith is the Bane Trilogy. Gold standard for space combat and pilots is the first few books of the X-wing series. Gold standard for higher aspirations would be Traitor. That would pretty much be the core EU I compare everything else to.

My First real step in to the EU was Tales of The Jedi back in the early Nineties, and to this day the Old republic era is the Pantheon of all Star Wars in my Honest opinion, It wasn't until after AOTC was released and I Started collecting the Republic Comic Line, that I was really introduced to the whole EU.

Old Republic: TOTJ, KotOR.

Movie era: Republic Comic Line, Labyrinth of evil, ROTS Novelization,

NJO: Traitor.

Legacy: Bloodlines, Fury, Sacrifice, Invincible, Backlash, Allies, Vortex. Legacy Comic Line.

Gold Standard? I kinda Love it all (Apart from the Clone Wars TV show, I just accept that lol)

Actually, while I liked NJO, I was still relatively new to the EU (probably still am, from a certain point of view) and I felt, still do, in fact, that the Sith are the natural enemies of the Jedi, and bringing in these Vong took a long time to get used to.

For me, the gold standard has to be Stackpole's and Allston's X-Wing series.

I was fairly well grounded in the bantam era when I started reading Star Wars, and I started when the NJO was already out. I remember being very reluctant to start that series. But once I did, I liked it. It was definitely a step in a different direction at the time.

Lynch me if you feel inclined, but LotF was my first real EU experience so I tend to measure things with that. I started reading EU books when Exile had recently came out.

@Skuldren: I pity you...
