Welcome, John!

Absolutely loved the Knight Errant book, what a great way to kick off the 2011 SW novel season (and my fingers are soooo crossed for a sequel!). I really didn't expect to get sucked into a time period set before the films, especially with The Old Republic gearing up to do the same thing right now. Have you been actively working to make sure that your time period really sets itself apart from the TOR era, or do you find that it comes about naturally?

Really looking forward to the LTotS Anthology too! I'm old school, so I haven't read them yet and have been greatly anticipating the collection.

Most excellent!

And a GRAND WELCOME to you John Jackson Miller!

I'm loving Knight Errant so much right now! I'm gong to be sad when it ends- but then I only have to wait for Deluge #1 to get my fix again!

Hehe. Emp, I read your post as 'welcome, you rebel scum!' Thought that was a slightly disastrous way of welcoming Miller, until I realised it was your signature!

Welcome, Mr. Miller! I hope you enjoy your stay. The exits are here *points sideways, here *points forward*, and here *points to hidden escape hatch in the toilet*

If you don't mind, I have a question. When confronting a series like KOTOR, and lately Knight Errant, how much, storywise, do you have planned? I'd imagine with Knight Errant, it's quite open to ongoing story lines, instead of a set time line. Or is there a set number of issues that you want the story told by?

Thanks for the welcome, folks. I've been beyond busy lately and haven't made the rounds on the boards in ages, but I'm glad to add this as a stop.

A good question. KOTOR by its nature had more of a linear structure to it -- Zayne had a goal, and he would either advance toward it or be thwarted. So while I elaborated quite a bit on it and interlaced it with two other character arcs -- Jarael's and Rohlan's -- I knew where the ports up ahead were as I was sailing.

Meanwhile, there is no way (we think) for Kerra to succeed at her ultimate goal, so it's structured much more like the branches of a tree, radiating outward. Now, I have a sense of what the overall tree looks like -- as readers saw by the end of the novel -- and I know some of the moments I want to depict along the way (her returning to Aquilaris is one). It is, as you say, open to a number of storylines -- just as shows like the old Have Gun, Will Travel were -- but unlike completely unconnected episodes, they all have a certain wider importance, in terms of how they shape the tree, and how the characters are changed by them. The pre-novel Kerra wouldn't react the same way to the events of "Deluge" as the post-novel Kerra. That's why we put it where it is.

Welcome John and thanks for creating a great new female protagonist for the EU.

It hasn't been a problem at all, really -- our strategic situation is really more about a balance of terror between Sith Lords. The Republic isn't absent, but in what we've seen to date, it might as well be.

And there's so much that's changed over the years between the two periods, anyway -- we are closer to Julius Caesar than Kerra is to anyone in the TOR era. I think the environments should feel pretty distinct.

Now that is very intriguing. And thank you, too!

I get what you're saying about the KOTOR series (by the way, while I knew a little bit about Jarael, the Rohlan arc took me completely by surprise!), and it's interesting how you think she can't succeed at her ultimate goal. Because that makes me wonder at what her ultimate goal is. The destruction of the Sith, or the rescuing of innocents.

I do have one or two other questions, though. Do you prefer to have a set storyline, like KOTOR, or the Have Gun, Will Travel way of doing things with Knight Errant?

And another: How was the Lost Tribe of the Sith series set up? Meaning, who conceived it, how did you come to be involved? Because I guess it's a pretty big step, going from comic to prose. Or maybe it wasn't too big a step. I don't know! Was it, for you?

Once again, thank you!
