Many celebrate memorial day without even knowing itss history. The first year it was celebrated was 1865. At the end of the civil war, it was decided to have a weekend to commemorate all Union soldiers lost in that war. . That, of course, upset the Southerns so they decided to have May 30, it's original date, to remember both sides' losses. In 1968, it was moved as federal holiday to be one of three (President's Day and Veteran's Day) three day weekends.
After WWI the holiday grew to include all lost in any American fought war. It, unlike Veteran's Day and other holidays, it is not a celebration, but a commemoration of all those you died to make the American freedom we have today.
Thought you might like to know that
God bless all who fought and died to protect America and her freedoms! _________________ EUCantina.net Founder. Forum Admin.
