So if you live in the midwest United States, or supposedly any one of these states: AL, AR, GA, IN, IL, KY, LA, MD, MO, MS, NC, OK, SC, TN, and VA; then you've been at the mercy of The Great Sounthern Brood...or Brood XIX. On a one-on-one basis, we're talking about the cicada, or locust, or perhaps a more fancy pants term like magicicada. Once every 13 years (or sometimes 17, depending on the brood) the cicada burrows out of the ground, escapes it's shell and goes into mating season with its unique (read annoying) mating call (and enduring whining sound).

These little critters can be as numerous as 1 millions per acre. Not to be confused with the annual cicadas, the XIX brood is out in full force right now.

Here's some pictures I took:

My pleasant looking yard...

...upon closer inspection it's infested with bugs!

They hatched from these shells...

I reckon there's about a million in my backwoods. Sure sounds like at least a 100,000

Oh dear. You have my sympathies, Skuls, it certainly sounds quite annoying, to say the least.

On a sidenote, you've a very nice-looking back garden.

Garden? Interesting way of putting it...so what exactly is the definition of a garden in England? Here in the states we define a garden as something full of vegetables or flowers.

Unless he was joking, perhaps it means backyard? Confused

Living in Louisiana, I must say I don't think we've ever had a major problem with those guys. Our worst enemy/nightmare are the love bugs! Agh! They have no natural predators and no purpose. They truly are a curse. Sad

I...don't know why that would be a joke? Unless garden means something else over there? But, yes, garden basically means back yard.

No, but it's just you, Life! You're so...amusing, it only seemed right that it might be a joke. Wink

Well here in the midwest no one would equate garden with backyard. I wonder if that's a UK thing or if other people do that too.

Laughing Over here, Life, "garden" means "A piece of ground, often near a house, used for growing flowers, fruit, or vegetables".

Very Happy Nope. How is it that on one of the rare times when I'm not joking, people think I am?!

That's pretty much what it means over here, too. Although it's always adjacent to a house, and not necessarily used for growing things. It simply means the piece of greenery next to your house, which may be used for growing fruit or vegetables, but that doesn't discount trees, shrubbery, gnomes or other assorted greenery being there, too.
