I'm going to create this thread to cover all the original fiction short stories Star Wars Insider is now including because there seem to be a lot of them now and there's no sign of them stopping.

Now I'm no longer a subscriber to Insider, but all of these new short stories are giving me serious second thoughts.

Paul S. Kemp (Crosscurrent, Deceived, Riptide) just announced on Twitter today that he's writing an upcoming short story for Insider that will probably be in their October issue. It will feature Khedryn and Maar, the two spacers from Crosscurrent and Riptide.

Also feel free to share your thoughts on whether you think Insider is now worth the money considering the short stories.

You know, you don't have to be a subscriber to read the short stories (well, at least once). You can find the last issue always online for free and legally. I read it this way since it was announced in the official site. You'll find it here.

Well, if it's online, and you're reading it just for the short story, then no, I'd say it's not worth it!

However, that issue, there, looked quite good! It reminded me of the old Star Wars Magazine I used to read, during the time of the films (I thought it was the precursor to Insider, but it turned out it wasn't). It comes out every two months, right? And is roughly 5ish? Hmm. I'd say it's worth it.

This thread is just what I've been looking for. A shame it got buried so quickly.

I've never been much for mags, but after years of hearing about the SS in Insider and others, and after realizing that Del Ray doesn't seem inclined to do any more Tales collections Evil or Very Mad , I may track down some of the older issues. I just found a copy of Insider #86 offered by a third party seller on Amazon for only $8, so I may pick it up soon.

Why #86? Short answer:

Unknown Soldier: The Story of General Grievous.

I've been itching to read it for years.

One question, though: not all of the Insider issues have short stories or other "in-universe" material, do they?

I wouldn't say Del Rey isn't inclined to do more Tales of ... rather than they're not getting the green light to do them. Del Rey does not have final say on what will or will not be published.

@Alan: no, not all Insider's have short stories, however just about all the recent ones do.

The Hondo story in this months issue was pretty good, I was super happy to see him getting some new stories. Plus with the Kenobi tie in story from last issue I would
Say they have been the best part of the magazine.

I used to buy the Insider issues mostly just because I was a completionist who wanted all stories.

Then I stopped being a completionist, and discovered that I wasn't reading most of the short stories I was buying.

The straw that broke the camel's back was a recent issue (I think it was Insider Summer Special, from like May/June?) which advertised a new original short story, but it was just the Vestara Khai story (First Blood?) that Insider had published almost a year earlier. Thank God I checked before buying.

So now all the money that once went into buying Insider for a 6-page short story now goes straight to the good people at Marvel Comics Smile

A list of the Inisders which contain short stories is about 2/3 down the page:

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_short_stories

Also lists all the other short stories.

As a completion, I'm working to track down a lot of the Insiders I've missed (which is slow going). I have managed to find copies of all the adventure Journals and Gamer Magazines though, so that's a start.

So, apparently we're getting a new piece called "Hammer" in the upcoming issue featuring random balding Jedi from Geonosis and someone wearing armor that looks suspicious like Warb Null set near the end of the Clone Wars.
