Pronunciation - How do you say it?

I'm forever curious how to say the millions of names in Star Wars, be they names of people, planets, animals, ships, etc. I know some of the Essential Guides and such give us help on the more prominent ones, but some are never specified. Sooo...here we can discuss how we say the different names, or specify how an Essential Guide says to pronounce it, or to just ask what the general consensus is on a pronunciation. Anyway, have fun! First ones I have to throw out there are:

Ton Phanan - Do you say it Ton like Tom, or Ton like ton?

Daala - Do you say it Dah-la or Day-la?

Vergere - Do you say it Ver-jeer or Ver-gare? Or even different?

Ysanne Isard - Do you say it Esane or Esan? Is-ard or Eye-sard?

I know the Essential Guide to Characters specifies the last three, but I was saying them all wrong, so was curious how anybody else said them. Smile

Nice topic, MJ.

As I never really "talk" about SW with anyone, only write about it in forums like this, I never have an opportunity to hear others pronounce these names. I remember being surprised in AotC at Doo-KOO.

As for the ones you mention, I read

VER-jer
DAH-lah

How about "Sebatyne"? I've always read

You are correct on Vergere and Sebatyne. I always said both of those wrong. I would say Ver-gear and Sah-bat-in. Your pronunciations are correct, though. Daala, however, is supposedly pronounced Day-la. I had always said it Dah-la, too. I mean hey, who knew? Smile

Day-lah?

Does anyone know of other instances in which "aa" is pronounced "ā"?

Here's a list of words containing "aa" and as you'll notice most of them are not of English origin.

The only one I notice that uses "ā" is quite suitably the sedative "quaalude," which strangely enough takes it odd spelling from a product developed by the same company, Maalox.

Yep, I thought it was odd myself. But that's what it says: Dā-lä. *shrugs*

Edit: And that last 'a' has two dots over it...since it's really hard to tell.

I've always said it Dah-la and Ver-gear.

Those two I'm not changing. Cool

And is it Mar-uh or Mare-uh?

I've always prounounced it as the latter.

Oooh, no. It's Mar-uh. And that's how I've always said it. I've never thought to say it Mare-uh. That's interesting, though. *ponders*

I pronounce it correctly most of the time, but I will slip from time to time with Mara.

This makes me think of the meanings of some names, while we're at it. And how I think it's neat that for a lot of Star Wars names, their meanings fit the character perfectly. Instead of just being a randomly given name. For instance:

Luke: bringer of light
Mara: bitter
Solo: any activity that is performed alone without assistance
Bane: a source of harm or ruin

And the list goes on. Some of those are obvious, yes, but just thought it was kind of cool. Smile

This is one thing I've always had so much fun with in Star Wars: pronunciation. The guides tell us how to pronounce it one way but then the audiobooks do it another. For Vergere, the audiobooks pronounce it so it sounds more French but since the guide came out first (and that's how I always said it to begin with), I'll put more faith into it Very Happy

Also, from the few people I have talked SW books with before, all three of us would pronounce something differently but we all knew what the others were talking about anyway Laughing

I've only ever listened to one of the audios, so I never noticed how they pronounce names. Seems funny that they pronounce them differently from the guides. I would think the reader, or at least the publisher, would watch that. But guess not.

Ton Phanan = like "Tom" but with an "n"
Daala = Dah-la (dayla sounds ridiculous)
Vergere = I say this one like so ver-ger-ee (ger kind of like "jerk")
Ysanne Isard = Yu-zane I-sard
Saba Sebatyne = Sa-ba Sa-ban-ta (I know I butcher this one, but when I read, I like it to sound fluent. For some reason this pronunciation comes to me.)

Here some ones I came up with...
Exar Kun = Ex-czar Coon
Naga Sadow = Na-ga Sad-ow
Even Piell = Even Peal
Prince Xizor = Zi-zor
Cilghal = See-ghel (kind of like seagull)
Kenth Hamner = Hammer (I can't bring myself to say ham-ner)
Tycho Celchu = Tyco Kel-cho
Derek "Hobbie" Klivian = for some reason I say Kilvian instead of Klivian
Ooryl Qrygg = Orel Kerg
