Yeah, I used to live in Belgium and I remember that some of my friends said they put their shoes by the chimney and got sweets on January 6th. I remember there was like a town festival thing and Santa (can't remember the Belgian equivalent) came down in a helicopter with Black Pete (this was a man who dressed like a minstrel, like Tintin's assistant in Tintin in the Congo [sorry if I offended anyone but this actually happened]) and gave sweets and chocolate to everyone. The whole Black Pete thing was incredibly out-of-date and un-PC but it was still happening in 2008.

I still don't have to do it. It's too soon!!!

In fact, we give our presents our last holyday day: January 6th. We call the Magi "the Three Kings" and follow the tradition of giving the children their presents that day just like the Magi gave theirs to Jesus.

When I was a kid Epiphany was the official end of the Xmas season where I lived. And we use Magi and Wise Men interchangeably.

Well we're having Christmas at our place.

And It's Christmas Eve.

I'm hoping to get anything, really. I'm happy with anything. Unless, it's wildly out of wack.

We had our first Christmas gathering with my maternal grandfather's extended family on Sunday. Tonight we're having supper with my maternal grandmother's extended family. I'm uncertain as to how it'll turn out, though, because my great-grandmother has been in and out of the hospital since Wednesday. She's at home now and I really hope she won't get sick again tonight; it would stink for her to end up in the hospital on Christmas Eve.

Church services tomorrow morning, then we'll have lunch with Dad's immediate family. In the evening we'll have breakfast-at-supper with Mom's immediate family; we traditionally do breakfast with them on Christmas morning, but due to it falling on Sunday this year, it'll be breakfast-at-supper.

Merry Christmas!

I just got home from a long conference in Geneva, and haven't quite finished shopping.

I took the car this morning and picked up a few last-minute gifts, and will also buy something online in a few minutes (I'm hoping to get my wife tickets to West Side Story, and make a date-night of it).

I'm spending Christmas Day with my wife and cat, and then around New Year's I'll be spending time with my parents (incl. my sister, her husband, and her kids), and my in-laws. Good times.

Oh, and this was fun: the conference I was at was Chaired by the UN Ambassador from the Netherlands, and the Conference started on December 5, which was Sinterklaas, celebrated by the Dutch and other Europeans. As a treat, the Ambassador gave each country a Chocolate Letter (one of the traditions, apparently), and gave us the first letter of our country. Yum Smile

Since we don't celebrate any holidays around my house (except birthdays) tomorrow will just be another day for us.

Well, I'm an atheist, but the rest of my family are Christian, so they celebrate Christmas for the whole Jesus thing, but I just like the idea of everyone being nice to eachother for once. Putting everything aside and just being selfless.
