I've always said 'Back-ta'.

^ Same here. I'd like to say I've heard it said somewhere, and I'm basing it off that, but I haven't listened to any audios of the books, so it must be from a video game. Maybe Empire At War?

As someone else said, I'd avoid looking to the audiobooks for official pronunciation. Many years ago I listened to part of the audiobook for one of the Thrawn books, and the pronunciation was a complete disaster.

Xizor is pronounced "She-Zor" right? I just started reading Shadows of the Empire and the book tells you that Xizor's chair robot pronounces his name that way.

It is pronounced She-Zor, yes.

I used to pronounce it Zi-Sore.

Oh, I'd say ZI-zore.

I say Zie-zor. This is because I got the impression that She-zor was incorrect from the book. Apparently the chair merely elongated the first syllable. That Xizor was quite nit-picky, wasn't he? You'd think that, after becoming the head of the galaxy's largest criminal organisation, he'd learn to chill out a bit ...

Yea that's what I envisioned his name sounding like when I read SotE.

Or did he become the head of the galaxy's largest criminal organisation by never chilling out? That's the question Wink

Thoughts on Swokes Swokes?

I pronounce it by taking makemake as the template: swoh-keh-swoh-kes.

I say it sorta like you would say spokes as in the the spokes on a bicycle tire, but with the swo instead of spo.

re Xizor: the first time I ever learned about him was when Shadows of the Empire first came out. I wasn't into Star Wars books or comics yet. They pronounced it SHEE-Zor on the TV spots for the toy line. So that's the way I always pronounced it.

RE: apostrophe discussion

Linguistically, at least in this galaxy, an apostrophe in the middle of a word (that's not used grammatically as an indication of plurality (like in Dutch) or possession (like in English)) is often used to designate a stop, pause, or a separation of syllables. Sometimes it's just part of the word; sometimes it references letters that have been removed from the word. So, I've generally used that as a guide in pronunciation of names, etc.

The easiest example I can think of off the top of my head is Ta'a Chume. The apostrophe in this case would give the first word double syllables: Tah-ah, instead of Tah (or Tay, if you follow the "official" Daala pruonunciation).

There's also some precedent for this in the Star Wars galaxy, at least in Mando'a, if you follow the official grammatical rules that Traviss made up for Lucasfilm.
