Did you know, Return of the jedi was originally going to be called "Revenge of the Jedi" but then they realized that Luke is not a sith and would not be that angry.

I even saw merchandise in the store that said Revenge of the Sith.

Dang, I'm so sorry now I did not buy it.

I like return of the Jedi much better and it reminds me of LOTR (return of the king).

I also prefer return of the Jedi.

Wouldn't you find the "Luke confronts his father and the Emperor on the DS II" part of the movie a bit wierd, if it was all about vengeance?

I prefer revenge of the jedi. It shows that there is lots of anger bottled up inside Luke, which there is Evil or Very Mad

It couldn't have been "revenge." It's not the Jedi way. And besides, if it was Revenge of the Jedi, we'd have Return of the Sith, and that just doesn't have the same ring to it.

Yes, Luke was angry, but this was beautifully portrayed in the final battle. He overcame his anger and instead used forgiveness and the Light to redeem his father. If the movie had been titled with 'Revenge', it would fail to indicate Luke's full journey from anger to forgiveness. And such.

I think 'Revenge of the Jedi' refers not to Luke's vengeance, but Obi-Wan and Yoda's vengeance. Just as Palpatine used a Skywalker to bring down the Jedi, they use another Skywalker to bring down the Sith.

But I prefer 'Return of the Jedi'; it's more accurate - Luke is the Return of the Jedi.

Don't forget that when ROTJ was released, the story line about him being Palpatine's apprentice and being manipulated by him hadn't been written back then. So far as we knew, Vader was a former Jedi who had turned to the dark side of his own accord, and because Obi-wan Kenobi had failed to teach him properly. It wasn't even clear that it was the Emperor who was behind the fact that there were hardly any Jedi left, so no one would have thought about Yoda and Ben Kenobi wanting to take vengeance on him for destroying the Jedi.

There were actually trailers released, calling the film 'Revenge of the Jedi' but they were pulled when the title was changed. Lucas switched the words after realizing that revenge was an emotion suited to the dark side, and that the film was about redemption, rather than vengeance. No Jedi should seek revenge, and that applies to Ben Kenobi and Yoda as much as it does Luke.
