Iran

With Iran being in the news almost daily, I was curious as to your guys' opinions on the subject. It seems the Obama administration is considering military action, the GOP candidate and Israel as well.

Would you support another war? Do you think Iran poses any threat to the United States or our allies?

We support your war of terror! May US and A kill every single terrorist! May Barack Obama drink the blood of every single man, woman and child of Iran! May you destroy their country so that for the next thousand years, not even a single lizard will survive in their desert!

I think it's more than likely that there'll be some sort of military conflict, but I don't think Iran is a threat. As of 2008, their military budget was over $9 billion. Compared to Australia's $19 billion. Now, they do have a large army, and can call upon more reservists, yes, but it's a volunteer militia, with basic equipment and minimal training, and even the Iranians say that they couldn't win in a straight up fight between them and a big hitter, like the UK, US, France or Germany. Or the Netherlands. Their military strategy is based on deterrent. If it came down to a proper fight, they'd lose rather quickly, and would fall back on guerilla tactics.

I am a Star Wars fan. That doesn't mean that I hate or love Jar Jar. That doesn't mean I hate or love Lucas, or agree or disagree 100% with him. That doesn't mean I prefer the PT over the OT, or vice versa. That doesn't mean I hate the EU, or even love all of it. These are not prerequisites. Being a man is not a prerequisite. Being a geek is not a prerequisite. The only prerequisite is that I love something about Star Wars. I am a Star Wars fan.

I know a precious little on the conflict in the Middle East and because of this I don't have much of an opinion on it, but I have to admit I was happy to hear that our troops are being pulled out.

In my opinion, a war with Iran right now would be a bad idea. They don't seem like much of a threat to the USA, and we've worn out our welcome over there. Continuing military actions at elevating levels overseas is putting a hard strain on us and our diplomatic relations. The US needs a break.

Furthermore it would have been better to send support back when they were having their protests over there.

Now if Israel wants to attack Iran, that's there business. If they were to attack Iran, and depending how things went, I could see the US lending them support, but in that sort of situation I think it would be very important to play only a supporting role and not to play a main role.

In the case of Israel attacking Iran, it's because a balancing act between diplomatic relations with other countries and supporting our allies. A compromise to achieve both ends would be playing a supporting role. Certainly not joining in at all might earn more points in diplomatic relations, but it would also destroy the US's relationship with Israel. Furthermore it would deteriorate our relationship with any country who thinks of us as an ally.

On the other hand, if Israel attacked Iran and we decide to go full scale and send all of the military support we can spare, that would certainly reinforce the world view of the US as an overly aggressive military power.

It would be a messy situation all around.
