See, I'm thinking that Pixar will take the classic fairy tale angle that Disney always did so well and do something darker and different with it than Disney would.

And after the first trailer, that's exactly what I thought they were doing. It's this trailer that makes me doubt.

I've actually seen that before. Amazing.

By the way, anyone see The Muppets and the Toy Story short in front of it? I thought it was adorable.

That was a really good short. I also loved The Muppets.

I still haven't gotten around to seeing The Muppets. The Toy Story short is a draw though.

It was so cute, Reep. Almost worth going just for the short.

I saw Brave last night!

Spoiler-free thoughts: I went to see Brave with my uncle last night and we both really enjoyed it (I think he actually enjoyed it even more than me; he was tearing up at the end Smile ). I really like both Merida and Elinor and could empathize with both of them even thought their opposites. For anyone who was worried about the trailers making Brave look like feminist propaganda - don't worry, it isn't. It's all about the relationship between Elinor and Merida and I'm happy to say they both learned a lesson by the end. Scotland is one of my favourite countries (it certainly has my favourite accent) and Pixar did a gorgeous job with capturing it's landscapes and atmosphere. It was also one of the funniest Pixar movies in a while... and slightly raunchier than usually. This would normally bother me more, but I don't know, it kind of fit with the setting. I don't think this is any indication that Pixar is becoming Dreamworks. So overall, not one of Pixar's best, but that is a lofty goal to reach. Brave is a solid, heartfelt, hilarious movie with beautiful animation. I recommend it.

One gripe:

I also saw Brave. I rather liked it and the animation was beautiful. I also adored Merida.

Just found out Toy Story 4 is happening. I'm going to go cry into my pillow now.

Seriously, why does this need to happen? We got a great sense of closure in TS3 with one of the most powerful endings in not just animation, but film in general.

It's just so disappointing. I really thought Pixar was classier than this. One of the many things that made them stand out in the 90s-00s was that - other than Toy Story 2, which was fantastic - was that they didn't make sequels. Remember all the non-Pixar animated sequels in those days?

The official explanation from Ed Catmull (president of Pixar) for the sudden burst of sequels is that, in order for Pixar to continue to make risky and innovative films like Up, WALL-E, Inside Out etc., they need money, and sequels make money. I like that Catmull is honest about it, and it may be necessary (though I'm still skeptical), but its still disappointing.

It is disappointing. I'm not willing to despair just yet, because supposedly Lasseter is personally overseeing all aspects of the projects and claimed that Pixar had no intention of continuing the franchise until the new, apparently fantastic idea came to them. But still, Tory Story 3 was the perfect closure and I'm less than thrilled about another sequel.
