I honestly found him an entertaining character, perhaps because he was so clumsy and obnoxious that it was comical. I'd probably at worst just feel indifferent to him.

I thought he was semi-funny when I was younger. The only scene of his that I laugh at now, though, is when Qui-Gon grabbed his tongue at the dinner table. Probably because that's the only time he shuts up... Laughing

Out of all six movies in the saga, Jar Jar is my LEAST favorite character. I agree with the star of death. I will kill

I've actually come to like Jar Jar. He's silly and sometimes obnoxious, but he can be amusing.

I totally agree! I burst into a fit of laughter when Jar Jar pulls of one of his...well when he talks! Very Happy

Looking back at this, I was very stupid and wrong. I have now learned to be indifferent and not kill characters of movies that I like.

No, you were right, and Jar Jar is even worse then we thought. Lucas gets applause for finally confirming that his character is a racist stereotype.

"There was something about his demeanor that suggested blackness and that suggested, more specifically, stereotypical blackness," says Michael Dyson, professor of African-American studies at Columbia University.

The notion that Jar Jar Binks is an offensive stereotype has spread quickly on the Internet. Deja.com has seen over 80,000 messages posted about Jar Jar, some from outraged viewers deriding him as a "classic coon stereotype," "a combination pimp and Barney" or "the star of 'Sambo Wars.'"

Lucasfilm issued a statement saying, "There is nothing in 'Star Wars' that is racially motivated. 'Star Wars' is a fantasy movie set in a galaxy far, far away. To dissect this movie as if it has some direct reference to the world we know today is absurd."

http://www.cnn.com/SHOWBIZ/Movies/9906/09/jar.jar/

So Lucas was totally lying there. How can Jar jar have no reference to the world we know, if he is based on Goofy?

Goofy's creator "described the character as "Think of the Goof as a composite of an everlasting optimist, a gullible Good Samaritan, a half-wit, a shiftless, good-natured colored boy and a hick"."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goofy

"Minstrel shows lampooned black people as dim-witted, lazy, buffoonish, superstitious, happy-go-lucky, and musical."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minstrel_show

Early Disney cartoons were just straight up racist, that's a fact.

My obsessive interest in Star Wars didn't blossom until I was 12 years old, which would be 2001. Meaning I was fairly indifferent to the release of TPM. I can't ever remember a time in my life I didn't know about Star Wars or hadn't seen the OT, but I wasn't Star Wars crazy quite yet in 1999. So point being I honestly can't remember the first time I saw TPM. It wasn't in theaters, and I think we got it from the library or something. But I know as a kid Jar Jar didn't really bother me that much. I didn't like him, but I didn't hate him.

Now I hate him. I cringe at his on screen shenanigans. I ponder how the likes of Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor could act opposite whatever likeness they had. I really struggle to get through TPM these days. It's secondhand embarrassment for the entirety.

Oftentimes I wish George had just left well enough alone.
