I've finished Cryptum and am now reading Primordium. I'm a little unsure about this one. The layout - that of changing the perspective from the Didact to that of Chakas - interests me greatly. But I do worry that, with this perspective, it won't feel much like a progression. That is to say, it will not build on the information gained from the first book, but rather merely give us an incomplete picture, have it feel like we're outsiders looking in on the action, rather than a part of it. But it's early, so whatever impressions I've gained from the first few chapters may not hold true for the rest of the book.

I despised Primordium. It didn't flow like the first book at all, none of the writing skill he displayed showed itself again. Hopefully the third installment will go better.

I'm reading We can remember for it you wholesale and other stories, a short story collection by Phillip K. Dick. It's really good so far.

I just finished Jack London's The Call of the Wild. I had forgotten how short it was and was surprised when I reached the end so quickly. Now if someone in the movie industry would just release the 1998 film adaptation on DVD! I've heard that it's the closest to the book.

I finished The Last Unicorn and I quite liked it. I really liked how the characters were aware they were in a fairy tale, but it wasn't just used as comic relief (e.g. "This is going to be a really short movie" in The Muppets). It was really interesting. The world-building was kind of unmemorable though.

I'm about 1/3 through Dandelion Wine.

Currently finishing 20th Century Ghosts by Joe Hill. Billed as a book of horror stories, but more macabre than scary. Most have no terror in them at all, they just leave you feeling unsettled and tense. I've very much enjoyed most of it. Like all short story compilations not every one is a winner, but most are downright fascinating and a couple I would consider outstanding.

I bought that not too long ago. Should get it out again.

"We Can Remember It For You Wholesale" is the story that became Total Recall, right? Might be good to read it (and re-watch the AH-nold film) before seeing the new movie.

Back to Primordium. It's not impressed me so far - though it hasn't made me want to poke my eyes out, either - but it's a slow read. Nothing that has stood out. So far, Chakas has walked in one direction on the Halo, and then walked another way. That's pretty much it, and I'm about 90 pages in.

In other news, I've come into a small amount of money, recently, and have done a bit of ordering. I've been wanting to move away from Star Wars and go into the sci-fi genre (though I'm not entirely a fan of sci-fi/fantasy, oddly enough), so I've ordered I, Robot by Asimov, Ringworld and Ringworld Engineers by Larry Niven - there are more books in the series, but the main four are standalones, so I'm seeing if these are any good first before ordering more - and Star Wars: The Clone Wars. I've heard a lot of talk about that book specifically, recently (mainly on Beyond the Films podcast) and I wanted to check it out for myself. As well as Gallows Thief by Bernard Cornwell (hello again, old friend) and Icarus Hunt by Timothy Zahn, which I heard about on Tosche Station radio.

I'm finally going to finish the Harry Potter series. I'm now reading The Goblet of Fire.

Hey, me too! I'm reading them for the first time, and just finished Prisoner of Azkaban, so now I'm on Goblet of Fire. Very Happy

^ Haha cool!

I'm enjoying GoF a lot right now. I thought the first three were decent, but for whatever reason this one is hooking me.

And Reepicheep is hooked, everyone, alert the media. Wink

Funny, considering GoF is my least favorite.

Razz

I don't think it's so much that GoF is the best book so far as it is that I've finally stopped comparing Potter to Narnia. The same thing happened with Narnia actually, because I compared it to LOTR and look how that turned out. Wink

I'll be interested to see what you think of Order of the Phoenix. I've heard several people list it as the worst in the series, but it's my favorite.
