I think that it was necessary for Qui-Gon to die and obviously they had to have someone to kill him. Thus the Qui-Gon vs. Darth Maul fight was born.
They wanted Darth Maul out of the way for Palpatine to take the lead role as bad guy and so got Obi-Wan to kill him. In the process he found out he was actually part of the Sith and it was revealed that they had risen again to make sure that every Jedi is suspicious and that Anakin suspects Palpatine without sounding ridiculous when reporting this to the council.
Back to Qui-Gon. If it wasn't for his death Anakin would have never fallen under the care of Obi-Wan. If he indeed survived, Obi-Wan wouldn't have anything to tell Luke later on and Vader wouldn't have been so bent on revenge.
There, I spoke my mind without even adding a single emoticon. _________________ We fight, we earn, we never learn. And through it all, the hero falls...
