Absolutely brilliant book! Especially the ending. I love how Allston can write a very sad moment - like a main character's death - and then in the very next page have me chuckling out loud.

What I loved, also, was the twist at the end. It was so obvious, looking back, that he was in on the conspiracy, too, and I should have anticipated it, but it was so artfully done that it actually took me by surprise. Something which is quite rare, indeed. Or maybe I'm just used to bluntly done sleights

. But this is how conspiracy stories should be handled. Not shoved in your face, not alluded to before hand, either overtly or covertly (with a high frequency), but have just enough of a mystery which seems innocuous and exists only to highlight the conspirators' paranoia.
