Definitely joking.
As for the Old Jedi Order and their procedures for Sith, they had but one rule: If you are Sith, you must die.
Whether you like it or not, that rule, though probably never official, was the general guideline of the Order. Most of the canon supports it as well. The Jedi felt that once you turned to the dark side, their was no turning back. Or at least they didn't harbor any hope for it. Ulic Qel Droma was about the only one who got away with it, and even then only begrudgingly.
Of course if I was a Jedi and Anakin just wiped out the temple and all the younglings, I don't think I'd be in all that forgiving a mood. I could forgive him for killing the Tusken's in anger, that was a rather understandable act. Even if he did kill woman and little children Tuskens. Then killing Windu, I could even forgive him of that. Windu did go absolute on Palpatine, deciding not to take him prisoner but to kill him instead. Anakin simply removed Mace's hand. In actuality Palps was the one to throw him out the window. However, his kneeling down at that point to become Darth Vader becomes rather questionable. Then he starts his bidding by taking out the temple. Once he killed the younglings, he crossed a boundary few murders even cross. The killing of innocent, defenseless beings of your own kind and culture is about as bad as it gets. At that point I say redemption is not possible.
Alas give someone 20 or 30 years and all the sudden they become redeemable. Go figure. _________________
