My wife and I were cleaning the house last weekend, and came across some cool old coins.

For those who don't know: whereas in the US only deceased presidents or other such political figures appear on currency, in Canada the current monarch is on all coins (and monarchs or prime ministers are on bills). Now, about 10 years ago, the design on our coins was changed to reflect a more up-to-date depiction of the Queen (for a long time she appeared as she was when she became Queen in the 50s). So it was really cool to see older coins with the younger Queen on them. But was cooler still was that we found a 50-cent coin that was from 1944, with King Goerge VI on it. I had never seen one before. It was pretty cool.

We also found some old US 25-cent, 50-cent, and 1-dollar coins from the 60s and 70s, one of which looked like it had JFK on it (from 1964; probably a memorial coin of some sort).

I had a 50-cent JFK coin. It was my "toss" coin. I somehow managed to lose it about a year ago. Smile

My good thing: Chess. I play 2-3 games a year in average and am by no means an (amateur) turnament level player. Well yesterday I've beaten one of the top three players in town. I used a "Wait for him to end a twelve hour shift and buy him some beer" strategy. I'm calling it Hogy's Gambit from now on. Laughing

Ah chess. The funny thing is that I know quite a few children that go to a chess school and are pretty highly ranked. Every once in a while I play them and they crush me. Its always humbling to get destroyed multiple times by a six year old. Shocked

I've just discovered a new breed of dog that I am TOTALLY IN LOVE WITH and I've decided that when I get a place of my own, I'm starting my family with one of these adorable creatures. Introducing the Pembroke Corgi...

A win for Tottenham at Old Trafford (first time since before I was born)

Pretty emotionally exhausted after watching the second half, but the lads hung on. Come on you Spurs!

P.S. I'm sorry Luke, but allow a bit of celebration. I've been waiting 22 years!

I'm still fuming at the team selection and our performance in the first half. You cannot play such an immobile midfield, got to have one of or both Cleverley and Anderson with Carrick/Scholes. Giggs as much as it pains me to say looks past it. Had a blatant penalty not given in the first half, Vertonghen was all over Nani. Big improvement second half, but we wasted so many chances and could have easily scored 4/5. I wouldn't say it was an undeserved victory but it wasn't a case of you running away with it either. 32 games to go though so still got time for a turn around.

In slightly better news, I'm off to see Axewound (the band, not what it's slang for Razz) next Saturday at Camden Underworld, and got a standing ticket for Green Day at the Emirates Stadium next year.

I did wonder if you were going down to Soho.

Although you could probably see one in Camden as well!

My grandma has coins with George VI on them. Cool

Continued from Gripe of the Day. Thankfully, I was early enough that I was able to stop at another Starbucks on the way and get the drink replaced. All without being too late to work. Meaning, yes, I was late, but the boss was later. Very Happy
