Gripe of the Day

Gripe: as some of you may know during the day campus library printers likely have a decent line as people wait to get their particular printing jobs printed. Which is fine most of the time. Today however 1 of the 3 printers in the library had gone nuts and was printing page after double sided page of random numbers. These two women are standing by the printer trying to get it to stop by hitting the cancel key. Realizing that one of the IT people will have to fix it they leave.

Now here is what roasted me: 1) the IT desk is literally 10 yards from the printing station 2) in order to leave the computer section of the library you have to walk right past the IT desk. So what do both of these women do as they leave? Both walk right past the IT desk WITHOUT either bothering to stop to report the malfunction. They were perfectly happy to just let the printer go until it ran out of paper or toner, whichever came first. Nor were they at all concerned that, by not reporting it, the rest of us would take longer to get our stuff printed because we'd have to use two printers instead of all three.

Once I got the other printer to start printing my things I went and reported it to the IT people (knowing that it would be a few minutes for my printing job to finish and I'd just be standing around otherwise). But by the time the IT person walked back with me to the printer and got it to stop the printer had printed at least 100 double sided pages of random number giberish. Really miffed me that the two women were so lazy and self centered that they couldn't be bothered to report it to the IT people on their way out and I had to do what they should have done.

It's kinda miffing me the way you're throwing around the term co-ed. How about just using the term "students"? Or does their gender actually have something to do with their self-centeredness?

And that's my gripe of the day.

As I understand it when gender is unspecified the default gender is male. In any event I see no problem if I elect to specify gender for descriptive purposes. Would you be mad if I decided to specify gender in another similar case for descriptive purposes and but that case meant the gender specified was male? Would you be just as mad if I had just said two women instead of co-ed or student where in another similar situation I might have said "two guys"?

If you read into it that the minute gender is specified it implies that the gender had something to do with the observed act fine. Just recognize that the same interpretation is applicable if the male gender was specified.

I'd prefer non-gender specific descriptors that denote these individuals are part of the human race as opposed to them being singled out by their gender.

You asked what I'd prefer so I answered. And yes I would consider the term "two women" at least more appropriate than "coeds" which is considered patronizing these days.

Thanks, and yeah the term is a holdover from way back in the day when women were a rarity in college. It refers to all male schools going coed to accommodate women, so honestly the term should be gender neutral by all rights.

"co ed" is a stupid term to describe women and actually makes no sense when describing a person at all, unless maybe it was a teacher who taught co ed.

The problem here that we require some kind of objective term where it is not necessary given the context of the situation. "Two women using a printer" what does them being women have anything to do with them using a printer? "two students" Ok, but since it is at a school we can assume they are students, or is there some unspoken issue of non students using the printer? "Two people" well yes, but we can assume that humans are using a printer and the printer is not being operated by a talking badger, or else operating under it's own will power and with malicious intent hiding it's deeds from the proper authorities.

Language is my gripe of the day.

Ps: Make Algebra my second gripe. I just can't get my head around it and when the teacher tries to explain it to me I only get more confused!
