Actually the movie novelizations are written from the movie scripts. They include scenes that don't make it into the final movie cut. They are completely canon.

The only real grey area is the Episode IV novelization, which was written before the movie and based on older scripts and concept art. So certain elements in the novelization (like Palpatine being a puppet ruler and the Moffs are really in control) aren't true. _________________ It was the year of fire… the year of destruction… the year we took back what was ours.
