I'm sorry to hear that, Jaina. Sad

I hate to even consider doing this, since I love reading fic on FF.N, but I will probably quit reading stories because they disabled the AdBlocker program they had that blocks ads on the site. Normally I don't even pay attention to the ads because I'm too busy reading stories, but today a truly disturbing, near pornographic ad kept popping up in my header bar. I let the site admins know how I felt about it on the blog they maintain for FF.N users to express their concerns, but I doubt they'll pay any attention because many users have been asking for weeks for AdBlocker to be restored and the admins haven't done it. The ad I kept seeing today was not one I would want a young kid to see, and if the admins can't find some way to control the ads that show on the site, then I'm leaving it for good.

Have you tried ABP? I find it very useful for blocking ads. Also Popper Blocker is good for those annoying popups.

No young kids should even be on ff.n and by signing up you agree that you are not 13. That's pretty standard for most sites, and if someone is found to be under age that's usually an immediate ban. The site owners just can't risk the liability when they find an under-age member. If young kids are seeing stuff on the internet that they shouldn't be seeing then that's on the parents. The parents should be doing their parenting job, and the computer should be in a room everyone has access to, like a family room.

True that no one under 13 can sign up for FF.N, but I know of at least one writer who openly said in a story AN that s/he was only twelve, so they do get around the rules. Even if kids aren't old enough to have an account, they could still be allowed to read stories if an older family member has an account on the site. Parents do need to monitor what children do on the Net, no question about that, but in this case I think the blame falls squarely on the FF.N admins' shoulders. They let writers and readers use the site for free and do need a way to generate revenue, but if they aren't listening when users have asked over the last for weeks for the AdBlocker to be restored( which, by the way, only worked on a day-to-day basis, not permanently) and are just letting ads run riot across the site, then they're failing in their maintenance of the site. Not to mention that abuse and plagiarism reports sent to them are often ignored for months before they finally do a sweep of the site to get rid of rule breaking stories.

Well, my parents had a rather terrible argument over the weekend, though I only just learned of some of the contents. At first I thought it was a minor thing, blown out of proportion, but ... let's just say ignorance is bliss. It was bad, yo.

Woke up in the middle of the night with an unexpected chest congestion and a hacking cough. It finally eased off early this morning, but I didn't sleep well. Went to work at 1:00 this afternoon. Started feeling bad again about 2:30. I stayed for the rest of my 3 and 1/2 hour shift, but now I'm feeling weak, achy, and chilly and feel like I can barely keep my eyes open. Will definitely be taking a hot bath tonight and going to bed an hour early.

The weather around here is giving me massive pressure in my head.

Also I nearly fired 3 people at work today (I found out today I could do that). I spent the first hour of my day cleaning up after the people who closed last night and had to stay late to get all my own stuff done and 2 of them had the balls to offend me.

Scholarship and grants searches are about to drive me nuts.

I won't be able to start grad school until next fall at the earliest, but with the absymal results I've had with the scholarships I applied for earlier this year and the frustration of searching for suitable scholarships and grants to apply for I'm wondering if it might not be better just to save up, no matter how long it takes.

Looks like The Book Thief has a limited release, meaning I'll probably have to wait a while until I can see it... unless I can find someone willing to drive me to Toronto. Sad

I've already worked one Black Friday shift and have to go back for another in a couple hours. *sigh*

I'm sick. And traveling for work.

Sufficiently sick that, if the doctor says I'm ok to fly, I'll be flying back home tomorrow.

I often get sick when traveling for work (my job requires close conversation and handshakes with many people, and if you act like a germophobe it really doesn't look good). But I've never been so sick that the first two days of my conference the boss told me to go back to the hotel, and now I need to go home.

Thankfully the other part of my work trip (last week) was quite productive. So it's not a complete loss.

But still. SICK!

I've applied for four part time library positions in the last year and landed only one interview. Here's hoping I'll have better luck in 2014. Sad
