So as you may or may not be aware of the Battlefield franchise is shifting gears from modern warfare to WWI.

Initially I was of mixed feelings leaning towards being against the idea. On the one hand I question how good it is to create a game based on the tragedy of WWI. On the other hand this article by the Guardian raises some good points on why it might be ok (https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/may/12/battlefield-war-game-first-world-war).

TLDR version of the article: we've accepted that making games on WWII is okay even though it simplifies down the conflict and underplays, or outright ignores, the tragic aspects of the war. If you're not okay attempting the same with WWI you should question why you're okay with war games at all.

The point of the article has gotten me reassessing my feelings. Primarily because as a kid I loved playing games like Combat flight Sim and Secret Weapons Over Normandy. I still enjoy games like War Thunder that whitewash the horror of war (you don't see any blood or guts and if you even see a soldier killed it's very 1960s in the "throw up hands, make look of pain on face, and collapse") or, the case of War Thunder, the terror of being part of a bomber crew early in the war when odds of survival weren't great. I've had no problem with games like that existing alongside serious approaches to WWII like Saving Private Ryan, The Pacific, or other gritty films.

Given that we already have satirical takes on WWI like Black Adder or light-hearted approaches like Snoopy's perpetual duel with the Red Barron I'm of a changing opinion that it's okay. At least I don't think I could defend being against a WWI game and continue to boot up War Thunder.
