Have no idea where to put this, but it is media, so here we go. Has anyone ever listened to the Star Wars radio drama created by NPR back in the day? Our library just got it (along with some other Star Wars titles) in an odd turn of events. They just suddenly up and subscribed to this downloadable service that allows you to "check out" various audio files. For instance, you can download the Backlash audiobook now, and it just counts as a checked out item.
I found that interesting, but anyway. Three of these downloadable items were the Star Wars radio dramas: ANH, ESB, and RotJ. I downloaded ANH and we listened to it on our return trip from GA. It was something like 6 and 1/2 hours, but it was so worth it! The only returning actors were Mark Hamill and Anthony Daniels, but I was fairly pleased with most of the replacement cast. Darth Vader was slightly unbearable, but what are you gonna do when you don't have James Earl Jones? Leia was also slightly annoying. I really enjoyed her character earlier in the show, but as it progressed, her voice became somewhat annoying. I chalked it up to the fact that Carrie Fisher had that deeper voice. A fact, I've come to conclude, that saved Princess Leia's character. Trust me, if she had had that normal-pitched girl's voice, I think she would have simply been an annoying damsel in distress, instead of our belovedly distressing damsel.
Anyway, Han's voice was excellent, and so were Obi-Wan's, Owen and Beru's, and all of the Imperial dudes. It also had almost 3 hours of extra content that was not in the movie, and that I also don't remember in the book. Most of the deleted scenes were included, as well as some scenes from the book. And there were even odd references to characters that never even saw the light of a Star Wars day in flim or on paper. This would be, as far as I know, the only place they ever existed. So yeah...some great extras, and a very enjoyable listen overall. Slightly cheesy and certainly cringeworthy at parts, but definitely recommended. If ever you have the time to listen to it, I'd recommend getting your hands on a copy.
Edit: There are also some scenes, and some lines, you will be more than happy didn't end up on screen. Some of them are downright awful, the worst being the dreadful "Torture Scene". If anyone's curious enough, I can post an audio clip of it. _________________
