Really? I did not know that...?

Yep. From Chaucer: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/sistren?s=t
As for the above poem, known as The English Lesson, there are various reasons why we have such oddities in the English language (as well as other languages). Here are two websites that provide some information:

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Why_is_the_plural_of_goose_geese
Here's a summarised version: The English language has many sources from which it draws its inspiration, its grammatical laws and list of words. Chief among these are German (Saxon), French (Norman), Gaelic, Celtic, Welsh, Breton, Latin, Greek, Norse, Scandinavian, Danish as well as many other countless dialects and 'dead' languages. All of these have jockeyed for dominance. As seen in the wiki article, only a few Old English words and grammatical forms have survived to this day. As language has evolved, some words have been dropped, and some have not. As seen, we do not say 'beek' but 'books'. But we do say 'mutton' as well as 'lamb'. This is because, when the Normans invaded, and became the new aristocracy, they brought their words. Like Moutton.
Now, in regards to the original article, that, too, is a demonstration of word evolution. Wound and wound would not always have been spelt (or spelled) the same. 'Knife' would have a pronounced K, for example. It is not perfect, of course, but it is understandable how it came to be. Out of the mishmash of languages colliding, morphing into one, we're bound to get some oddities. _________________ I am a Star Wars fan. That doesn't mean that I hate or love Jar Jar. That doesn't mean I hate or love Lucas, or agree or disagree 100% with him. That doesn't mean I prefer the PT over the OT, or vice versa. That doesn't mean I hate the EU, or even love all of it. These are not prerequisites. Being a man is not a prerequisite. Being a geek is not a prerequisite. The only prerequisite is that I love something about Star Wars. I am a Star Wars fan.
