Last night I created a tumblr account to host a new idea I had. I wanted to be able to apply some of the hundreds of great quotes from literature to Star Wars. So Lit and Star Wars was born: http://litandstarwars.tumblr.com/

Check it out and let me know what you think! I'll be updating it every day with a new Star Wars photo and quote from a piece of literature. The idea is to explain parts of Star Wars using content from different places. It's amazing how much can be connected.

Blimey! This took a long time to find!

I quite like it! Although I have no idea what this tumblr is. I do have one question. Regarding the Mace picture? The 'staring into abyss and abyss staring back' thing I get, but the first part of the quote doesn't seem to line up exactly. I never thought Mace was at risk of falling. Or are you referring to him killing Palps? Or am I simply reading too much into it?!

Well, first, part of the point is to let the readers interpret the quote themselves. So if you think it has to do with him killing Palps, that's possible. But for me, this quote connected to what we read in the ROTS novel. Mace was so determined to defeat Palpatine that he was sinking into Vaapad too much. In fighting the monster, he was allowing himself to become a monster and use the dark side. The question is if his good intentions made it justifiable to do this. That's the whole point of the quote. Nobody ever fights the monster intending to do wrong, but sometimes you start resorting to methods that turn you into a monster in the process.

It could also do with him almost killing Palps, though I've always felt that was actually the right move. I'd apply it more to the point in the battle, pretty much as shown in the picture, when Mace starts to slip towards the dark side in order to win. That's not really something you may get from the movie, but I think the novel points you in that direction.

I've got a new one up. This one is pretty easy to figure out, I'd think.

My latest post is the first one using an EU image. RIP, Ganner.

I'm curious. Can we give another quote to your pictures from time to time? I'd like to do it.

Cool idea, OMB. Star Wars and classic literature together. Cool

Ok, I have one for the picture you have posted today. I haven't found this in English, so I'll post it in Spanish and then I'll make a translation (it's easier that way).

Como, a nuestro parecer,
cualquier tiempo pasado
fue mejor.

Jorge Manrique; Coplas a la Muerte de su Padre.

How, to our seem,
any past time
was better.

Jorge Manrique; Songs for his Father's Death.

Correct. Maybe I'll find others for the oldest ones, but I'll have to think about it.

I have found another one. This one for the picture with Han and Leia:

Esto resulta del abuso de autoridad, de la opresión que la juventud padece; éstas son las seguridades que dan los padres y los tutores, y esto lo que se debe fiar en el sí de las niñas...

Leandro Fernández de Moratín; El sí de las niñas.

This is the result of misfeasance, of the oppression the young ones suffers; these are the reassurance parents and tutors give and this is what it must be trusted in the maiden's consent...

Leandro Fernandez de Moratín; The Maiden's Consent.

Oh I like those, OMB. I would definitely spend some time reading more of those.
