"You just have to agree that there's a certain amount of elasticity there," he said. "We maintain the flexibility of having the artistic license to say, 'yeah, but this is a really good story idea, so let's not tie the author's hands or the artist's hands on what he wants to do here, so let's let him explore the story, and we can figure it out retroactively.' He said they also consider whether every story has the same level of canonicity; whether a story can be changed to avoid breaking with continuity; and whether they can simply "take out the elements that would really stomp on another tale." |
Hahahaha! Confirmation at last!
Leland has hinted at this in the past. That once a product hits his desk, he will fix what he can without undermining the work, then send it off for publication while making a note in the Holocron of any remaining discrepancies. In other words, SW continuity is not maintained by Lucas Licensing, it is maintained after the fact by later content creators, though retcons.
Discrepancies are not rare, to be fixed with a retcon when they occur. They are the status quo, with the retcon as the only true source of continuity. Presumably this is how it is and has always been. Pablo just confirmed it. We have been expecting the moon, when really it was but an illusion cast on a moon fragment.
The only good thing about this is that it promises perfect continuity sooner or later. Cause sooner or later everything will be catched and retconned. Of course, new sources introduce new errors, but y'know hypothetically, perfect continuity is possible. _________________ I discuss to learn, not to win. Then again, learning enough tends to translate to victory in the end anyway.
