Zombie Apocalypse: Survival Strategies/Other Discussion

Sounds like the kind of friend you really are happy is on your side in a fight and also the type you make a mental memo "never EVER make this guy mad." Kinda like upsetting a Wookiee.

On the zombie note has anyone played Humans vs. Zombies? (for those not in the know it was/is a popular game on college campuses using nerf guns in a modified game of tag)

@Caedus: The Humans vs. Zombies I'm talking about is where you wear bandannas to designate human or zombie (armband if your human, headband if your a zombie). You have the "original zombie" who for a specified time period or X kills is disguised as a human (ie wears an armband instead of a headband). Humans can only use nerf guns or balled up socks, no melee weapons (getting hit by a dart/sock "stuns" a zombie for 15 minutes); zombies have to tag you with their hands to "infect" you. The whole thing lasts about a week or until the last human standing.

So far, our zombie hunting team consists of Life, Reep, Caedus, Salaris, and myself. Oh, and also one coward Old Master Ben, who is hiding the bunker. Wink

How y'all decided what role each of you will fill? I know it was discussed earlier, but this is official. We must be prepared.

I don't think a bunker is even really necessary. If you have some sort of walled estate with thick brick or cement walls you're pretty well off. If you have solar paneled roofing and some sort of large battery system you can get electricity for the house. The only problem then is water and food. With access to the exterior you can grow plants.

I don't think the zombie threat is really that huge except for the initial shock. That's why I'm more a fan of the first three Resident Evil games than most other zombie stories, because it either deals with people thrown into a situation completely unprepared or the initial shock of the citywide zombie infestation without preparation. But perhaps I find that more appealing because I'm more interested in the survival aspect of the stories than the psychological character studies, or the character study in that specific type of situation rather than some long term society building in the post-zombie apocalypse.

The Walking Dead is supposed to be the first ongoing zombie story that Kirkman wrote in response to the fact that zombie movies end and he wanted them to keep going, but if you keep going with the story you ultimately end up with stuff like the movie Land of the Dead and you get the mundane life of the post-zombie apocalypse. The stories are interesting because the characters are thrust into an unexpected situation of survival. Watching them set up a community and farm and argue with people over crap with higher stakes because it's the zombie apocalypse doesn't really appeal to me.

I suppose that's the other appeal to Resident Evil, is that in the first three games the zombie outbreak is localized, either to a mansion estate or a city. I guess that allows for a payoff for survival and eliminates the problem of what happens afterward. The worldwide zombie apocalypse allows for existential questions or whatever but that doesn't really interest me.

But back to the initial point, beyond the initial adaptation to the zombies, I think survival in a zombie apocalypse is pretty simple. Usually it's only thwarted by other humans warring over resources.
