Which SW film best defines SW to you?

I suppose it's similar to asking what your favorite SW film, but my answer isn't the same as my favorite film, although as a child it was my favorite film.

My answer is Return of the Jedi. I think a large part is that the music to it really was ubiquitous through the 90s EU, moreso I think that Empire Strikes Back and definitely moreso than the original film (which personally I think has an extremely underrated score). I think the tone of Return of the Jedi is really what defines Star Wars as a setting. I don't think Lucas was necessarily wholly satisfied with The Empire Strikes Back and was a lot more hands on with Return of the Jedi and consequently we got a film that's a lot more lighthearted and carefree in tone, yet still has the most powerful scene in the saga IMO.

I'll also go with Return of the Jedi. It has lots of aliens, a Deathstar, the Emperor being awesomely evil, it's even got Yoda. It has all the iconic imagery of Star Wars, and it wraps up the series. Definitely my definition of Star Wars.

ESB did have a darker feel to it, one you could almost say goes along with the darker feel of the NJO. I liked it, but I'd still say the heart of Star Wars is a bit lighter. At times it can go dark, but in the end, there's the light.

The original film. Loved the tench scene and Vader and Kenobi fight even if its tame compared to the prequels. As a fan of Mos eisley Laughing

I love the cantina scene. Sitting around having a few bevvies. Like I would do with all you guys if I could.

The Hidden Fortress - a Japanese film that heavily inspired SW. Especially the fighting styles and the way the Jedi dress and stuff.

Star Wars. I cannot bring myself, even still, to call it "A New Hope". When I saw it in '77 it was just "Star Wars", and Han shot first the way the gods intended.

Spent my summer vacation that year seeing SW a couple times a wekk with some friends who were equally obsessed. We probably had the thing emorized by the time school started again in September.

the only other film in the series that equals it is The Empire Strikes Back.

A New Hope. It set the stage and has the most memorable scenes in the saga.

first one that i saw, yes i know... wrong order, but the bespin duel was so sick and vader was a boss
