So, I watched TCW, read the Son of Dathomir comics, and listened to A New Dawn with the idea of seeing what the "new" canon would be. But that was only part of the reason. I also wanted to see what sort of things they would bring over from the Legends material into the new canon.

From an interview with JJM, he said that there actually was a bit of "Legends" material brought over. However, that was in the form of names of materials such as explosives and other mundane stuff like that. Ok, great. But what I'm really looking for are characters, places, events, vehicles, etc. Stuff like that. We got a little bit of that from Dave Filoni with TCW (even though some of those characters were a little bit different than the source text). I'm really hoping for more in Rebels and the next few books.

I'm wondering if anyone out there will be tracking everything that is brought over from Legends into the new canon? I think that would be an interesting list.

I'm not sure we will be seeing too many characters from the Legends continuity carry over - if they do, they will be very different. I think there's a good chance of places and vehicles crossing over - no good reason to change those.

A lot depends on the future publishing schedule. Right now, we've got the fourth quarter laid out with JJM and Luceno, first quarter next year will be Hearne and Kemp. I think the Christie will be around 3rd or 4th quarter with the Voss/Ventress novel.

With Celebration in April, we should get a batch of announcements on upcoming books. From that, we should get a good idea of what the future books are going to be like. Will they all be safe books (ie. nothing past ROTJ)? Will we see Episode VII tie-in novels? And what authors will we see? New ones? Old ones?

To me, that's going to mean a lot. I love the Legends material, but I also like the authors who wrote it just as much. As long as they're still around, I'll be around.

I would imagine pretty much all EU content other than specific plot points will be in and everything post ROTJ will be out.

For instance the West End Games and Universe guides and the Tales of Series that established back stories and names for pretty much every on screen creature, I'm sure that will be included. And all the planets and history and all that stuff.

Maybe not all the Dark Horse Sith stuff, but probably all the stuff that relates to the timelines of the movies.

The article below confuses me. Surely they're not saying any of the pre-Disney canon will be kept? I thought we could already rule that out. And I don't understand what they mean by officializing the EU. Was that not already being done? I thought that's what Leland Chee's entire job was to do. Confused

Mara, I read the article. I think the author is a little behind the times. That article should have been written last May after the initial "Legends" announcement was made.

As apparently there is still some confusion...

The LucasFilm Story Group, of which both Leland Chee and Pablo Hidalgo are members, has the job of guiding the "canon" of SW going forward. "Canon" means the official SW story as recognized by Disney/LFL. By "going forward" it means that all of the following are now the "official" canon:

1. The 6 movies (to include the latest SE's of the OT on Blu-Ray) and any new movies coming out (i.e. the ST and stand alones)
2. The Clone Wars tv show (to include season 6 (on Netflix) and other unaired episodes...ex. the Utapau arc that you can see on starwars.com) [NOTE: this does NOT include the Samari Jack style miniseries]
3. The Son of Dathomir (Darth Maul) comic from Dark Horse (which is essentially an unaired season 6 episode arc of TCW)
4. The novelizations of the 6 movies...IMPORTANT..."where they align with the movies".
5. All new books beginning with "A New Dawn" from last year (then "Tarkin", "Hear to the Jedi", "Lords of the Sith", etc.). This includes young reader books that started with the Rebels tv show tie-ins.
6. All "new" (meaning NOT reprints) comics from Marvel (beginning Jan. 2015)
7. The Rebels tv show and any new tv show that may be produced
8. New fiction stories that appear in the Star Wars Insider beginning with "Blade Squadron" in issue #150.

NOTE: It's been said that the new video games (perhaps beginning with the new Battlefront later this year) will also be considered official canon, but I don't know how that will work given the nature of video games' story telling.

That's it. Nothing else. Everything else is considered "Legends".

That said, producers of new content have at their disposal almost anything from the "Legends" material (with the approval of the Story Group) to use in their new story. Anything used in that capacity will from then forward be considered "canon".

The Story Group's job is to coordinate all of this into one cohesive continuity canonical story.

So, from what "canon" we already have, you can see that some of the "pre-Disney" EU has already been canonized. And based on comments that I've heard and read from both Pablo and Leland, there will be much more Legends material making the crossover.

I hope this helps.

Hey all, I don't know if this has been posted here, but someone on facebook posted a nice quote that I think most people here will appreciate:

"According to Lucas Licensing Editor Sue Rostoni, 'Canon refers to an authoritative list of books that the Lucas Licensing editors consider an authentic part of the official Star Wars history. Our goal is to present a continuous and unified history of the Star Wars galaxy, insofar as that history does not conflict with, or undermine the meaning of Mr. Lucas' Star Wars saga of films and screenplays.' Things that Lucas Licensing does not consider official parts of the continuous Star Wars history show an Infinities logo or are contained in Star Wars Tales. Everything else is considered canon." -Star Wars Gamer #6, July 1, 2001

That is pretty much the argument that I tried to make for years to the "EU sucks and is not canon" crowd on various boards. I wish I had that quote back then. I know that with "Legends" it's a moot point, but just wanted to post it where people will appreciate it.

Those people always spouted uninformed poodoo anyway. Earliest reference to the EU being explicitly canon I can recall is an early SW Gamer issue, long before even the Holocron system.

Which now of course means we should be far past the point of putting any sort of stock in what Lucasfilm considers to be canon at a given point in time.
