Agreed. THG needs to be read in its entirety before judgment can really be made.

Bad news: Gary Ross has likely opted out of Catching Fire. I now feel like it's going to suck. Sad

Why did he ditch?

There isn't an official announcement by Lionsgate yet, so I suppose it could just be a nasty rumour, but I doubt it. I know that Ross wanted a raise for Catching Fire as he only received 3M from The Hunger Games (I'd be more than happy to receive that kind of money personally Confused ) so it could be that. If it is, I'm a little ticked at him. Depending on who they get, this could kill the franchise.

Ya, easily. I dunno, for a director of something that was that big though 3M isn't much, it can be insulting I guess

Then why did he agree to direct the movie? If he wasn't happy with the salary, he shouldn't have directed the movie. How do you abandon a franchise this successful at this date? Who cares about the salary, it could get his name out there. And 3 million is nothing to laugh at. Confused

Ross didn't opt out of directing the sequel just over money (and it is confirmed. Indiewire got an exclusive on it). You can read about it at this link. http://is.gd/oDOo2o

And his name's already out there. He directed Pleasantville and Seabiscuit which were both very successfull and in Oscar contention. Hunger Games only enhanced his reputation; it didn't make it.

Lots of times directors don't see a franchise through to the end. Look at how many directors the Harry Potter series had.

I'm not sure how much I buy the 'not doing sequels' thing. I'm pretty sure I remember him excited about doing Catching Fire in an interview. Even if that is the case, might this be a good time for an exception?

Well, it's not happening, and really the figure Lionsgate floated was lowballed to the point where it was kind of insulting. Maybe Ross also just didn't feel like dealing with it.

Ah, well that makes sense. I didn't realize he was already an established director.

And look how wildly the tone and cinematography shifted from film to film. Confused

I'm really worried about Catching Fire. It's the weakest in the series imo and places the highest emphasis on the love triangle. Seeing the mob scene in The Hunger Games (great addition) got me excited for it, but now who knows?

I found Catching Fire and the first book to have so much more strength than the finale. Catching Fire was what really got me excited, the first book was just ok to me.

Catching Fire is actually my favorite of the trilogy. And I hate the love triangle. Hmm.

And that's what I thought the first time I read them. When I read them the second time, I found I had a new respect for The Hunger Games and Catching Fire stood out to me as the bridging novel, a common symptom of middle books. I still like Mockingjay the best.

My sister is well into The Hunger Games now and she agrees with me that it's better than Harry Potter. Razz

I have to agree with you, Reep, although as a bridging book, Catching Fire works quite well. It's really just one entire story, and works better read back to back.
