Essential Reading

Of the list the books I have read are:

2 The Lord of the Rings – JRR Tolkien
5 To Kill a Mockingbird – Harper Lee
8 Nineteen Eighty Four – George Orwell
16 The Hobbit – JRR Tolkien
18 Catcher in the Rye – JD Salinger
49 Lord of the Flies – William Golding
57 A Tale Of Two Cities – Charles Dickens
81 A Christmas Carol – Charles Dickens
89 Adventures of Sherlock Holmes – Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
91 Heart of Darkness – Joseph Conrad
98 Hamlet – William Shakespeare

Of those I found Catcher in the Rye unbearable to read. Then again it was part of my high school english class so deconstructing the symbolism in a search for "but what did the author really mean?" probably had a lot to do with why I loathed that book.

As for books I want to read:

97 The Three Musketeers – Alexandre Dumas

I suppose it would be good to read all 100 eventually though.

And I think I've read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but can't be sure.
I've also read portions a good few more books, but didn't finish, for varying reasons.

I've just realised that I have this game thing for the DS, which is a collection of a 100 classic books. I'm curious as to how many of the above list I have on there, as well as my own suggestions.

Has anyone been watching The Lizzie Bennet Diaries?

For those who don't know, it's a vlog on youtube, updated twice weekly, that is a modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice. It is told from the perspective of Lizzie (Elizabeth) Bennet, and features sisters Jane and Lydia and best friend Charlotte, and they recount the events of the previous day in a slow retelling of the novel.

It's so good!

Occasionally, they throw lines from the book directly, and will often be all "WHO TALKS LIKE THAT?!"

On another note, I read a bigthink article extolling the virtues of Thornton Wilder's The Bridge of San Luis Rey. I'm familiar with Wilder, though I haven't read anything by him. Has anyone read it? Thoughts?

New, essential, must-read fiction...

The first three books in Kevin Hearne's Iron Druid Chronicles. Absolutely fun, funny, and entertaining.
