I think it always helps Star Wars Fans to understand what, if anything, is at risk. I mean they didn't say that they were going to knock anything out- but at the same time they said they were going to keep it fresh- and the only way I see that is by telling new stories- and eventually we'll be telling 2 stories at the same time. So potentially what's at risk? |

There is a metric ****-tonne of stuff.
Between 0 and 1 ABY there are approximately 70 works (comic series, novels, junior novels, short stories, games etc).
and between 1 and 2 ABY there are 20 works. (admittedly somewhat more manageable)

That's just in the first year after ANH. That plus Marvel's first 34 issues or so, SW Missions, Galaxy of Fear, Classic SW newsstrips, etc.... It just goes on and on. That is the last place on the timeline that we need another story. They're just going for new fans. They don't even try to hide that fact. Randy Stradley said straight out it was because the EU is too daunting for people to dive into. Just like you say, I don't know when these poor people even had time to use the 'fresher. |
In short, there is WAY too much stuff to justify shoving in another comic series.
Even just to start, the following things all claim to happen "within hours to days of the Battle of Yavin"
The Day After the Death Star
Missions: Assualt on Yavin IV (and sequels)
Rebel Force: Target (and sequels)
The Rebel Thief
A Long Time Ago... (Marvel collection)
Classic Star Wars: In Deadly Pursuit
And (i think) the old newspaper strips.
I'm probably also not thinking of some others that I've found ways to move around.
In short, starting anything new (like, say... a comic series) until about 6 months after the Battle of Yavin is insane!! And a major pain in the ass timeline wise.
Yes, a lot of these can be condensed down into a few days of activity, but unless there is some reference in the new material to time spent away for various of these to fit in, it is simply impossible to give a continuous narrative that involves the big 3.
Especially when in some sources Han disappears for months on end, and then returns, and in others he's hanging out with the rebellion. (That alone is a nightmare to reconcile).
