The only real grey area is the Episode IV novelization, which was written before the movie and based on older scripts and concept art. So certain elements in the novelization (like Palpatine being a puppet ruler and the Moffs are really in control) aren't true.

Not completely, partially. You don't get any less canon than a source that contradicts the movies and hasn't gone through Licencing testing. Which also undermines the value of Lucas input on the Stover novelization.

According to Leland all the OT novels are outdated. He recommended Windham's junior novels instead. Make of that what you will.
