I've been rewatching TCW on my way to watching The Lost Missions, and I just finished watching the Mortis arc.

Now, this might be an unpopular opinion, but I like the Mortis arc. I've never understood why it's been so hated, to the point of people avoiding mentions of it in novels like FOTJ: Apocalypse. I like the exploration of the Force, Qui-Gon's appearance, and evil Ahsoka. Sure, it could be rather heavy-handed at times, but for 3 22-minute episodes of an animated TV show, it did a really good job.

So, I guess I'm just wondering - why do people not like it?

It's been a long time since I've seen it, but the short version is: I don't get it.

We've always been told that the dark side is evil, but the episode has this yin-yang thing going on where bringing balance to the Force doesn't mean defeating the dark side, but balancing it with the light.

^I guess that's always how I've seen balance - light equal with darkness, so what the show said worked for me.

It's been awhile since I've seen it, but doesn't it imply that Anakin is fated to turn to the dark Side and there is really nothing that he can do about it? If so, people might not have liked that.

^ That's right! I forgot about that. I thought it was dumb having Anakin turn to the dark side pre-RotS. Totally steals the power of RotS. Rolling Eyes

I do like much of TCW, but I hate George's revisionism. *headdesk*

That isn't unique to Mortis though. The first Clone Wars cartoon (season 3, I don't recall the episode) has Anakin go to Nelvana and sees a vision of his fate as well. I see the Mortis appearance as being no different than any "always in motion is the future" vision.

There is always one thing we forget: the people saying that it was Anakin's "fate" to go dark could be wrong.

I enjoyed the Mortis arc quite a lot.

I didn't mind the visioon of the future so much as Anakin actually turning to the dark side, getting the Sith eyes and everything, and then losing all memory of it. I just thought that was dumb. It makes Anakin's fall less momentous if he's done it before.

I love everything about the Mortis trilogy. It sends my brain spinning. What if the Dark Side isn't evil but only the Sith are? As if they are a perversion of the Dark Side? What if Bane was the one that perverted it through the Sith'ari prophecy, and the Chosen One prophecy was sent to counter it? To fix what Bane broke in the Force. I could write a rather long essay on the implications of just that hour of content!

That said, the Anakin falling bit doesn't seem that weird to me, nor do I think it lessens his real fall. I think that planet was so strong in the Force it was like the temptation of the Dark Side on steroids. It makes sense with his character that he'd choose that way every time. Not that he was fated to or had no choice, but that's just what he'd choose. It just makes it a bit more tragic for me.

I guess I didn't see Anakin as truly falling to the dark side - he was corrupted by the Son, just like Ahsoka was.
