A series of animated short films called Star Wars: Forces of Destiny that will focus on the female characters of Star Wars - specifically Leia Organa, Padme Amidala, Ahsoka Tano, Sabine Wren, Rey, and Jyn Erso - was recently announced at Celebration. The first eight shorts will air this July and another eight will follow in the fall.

The voice cast includes Daisy Ridley as Rey, Felicity Jones as Jyn Erso, Ashley Eckstein as Ahsoka Tano, Tiya Sircar as Sabine Wren, John Boyega as Finn, Matt Lanter as Anakin Skywalker, Venessa Marshall as Hera Syndulla, Catherine Taber as Padme Amidala, and Lupita Nyong'o as Maz Kanata. Leia will be voiced by Shelby Young.

I would have rather had these as longer episodes because I will miss having Star Wars on TV when Rebels ends, but because the voice cast is so impressive and the fact that they are canon is enough to get me a little excited about this. Jyn has become one of my favourite "canon" characters and obviously we won't get any stories with her following the events of Rogue One, so I'll take whatever I can get. It's also cool to see 2D animation getting some attention.

I'm hoping this paves the way for more 2D shows or even animated home releases. I'm probably most interested in the Rey & Jyn tales. They seem ripe with opportunity.

I was thinking that too! Just seeing Matt Lanter and Ashley Eckstein playing Anakin and (younger) Ahsoka again in something outside Rebels has me hoping that we just might see those unfinished The Clone Wars episodes someday as a home release or something.

(Great to see you again btw, Andrew!)

I was able to watch one of the shorts at Celebration. They showed a story that took place after Rey found BB8 but before they made it back to her AT-AT home. It was kind of neat. The animation is fine, the voice work is great, and it's a small self-contained story.

Aw, man. Does this mean that when I do a marathon, I have to pause TFA when Rey finds BB-8, watch a short film, and then keep going? Razz

Did anyone watch these yet? The first 8 episodes are on YouTube now (next 8 won't be out until October). I liked them. I think the 2D animation looks good, and I think they have a lot of potential if they decide to make some more and maybe extended the runtime on them.

I saw them. Given that they're 2-3 minute long shorts and there's not much you can accomplish in that time... they're fine, I guess?

I thought the animation was okay (except for Anakin Bieber), but I prefer 3D animation for Star Wars.

Well, considering that I'm not the target audience for these, I still watched them (although I may have missed one because I don't remember Anakin Bieber).

For the most part, I thought they were cute, but rather...ummm...silly is the only word that comes to mind. Maybe it was the animation style that gave me that impression, or perhaps things like that Jakku sand creature, or how Chewie behaved. I liked the idea of them being sort of like "canon cut scenes" though. I think I liked the one with Leia and the Ewoks the best. However, I thought Hera was supposed to be on Endor with Leia?

All of that said, I think what these little snippets really are is marketing/advertisements directed at little girls to get them (well, their parents) to buy the new line of SW dolls. Meaning, I think that the dolls were developed first and then they decided to create these short animation bits to "sell" the dolls. I guess we'll see how well it works this Christmas.

Anakin was in "The Padawan Path".

You're right. I don't know why, but I was expecting just a little more from these. Nothing earth-shattering, but something. Maybe it was because I knew that Dave Filoni was involved. I've enjoyed Pixar short films all my life and I guess I was expecting something similar. They almost always make me feel a little something - a little joy, a little sadness etc. - but these just whizzed by without anything registering.

It's just part of the comedy of Star Wars fandom, I guess. Here we are, adults, discussing commercials for toys. Razz

Hera will be on Endor in an episode that's coming out in October. They've got another batch that will be coming out then. Having seen one of the episodes at Celebration, I knew what to expect, so that probably helped when I watched them. To me, they speak more of potential than anything else as I see this style of animation as a possible avenue to tell more Clone Wars stories even though TCW is over.

I never got into the old Clone Wars show which was 2D animated, but I think it started out like this with short 2 to 3 minutes episodes and *I think* it eventually got into some longer episodes as the series went on. I could be wrong about that, though.
