In our second upcoming novel created in collaboration with the Lucasfilm Story Group, bestselling Star Wars veteran James Luceno gives Tarkin the Darth Plagueis treatment, bringing a legendary character from A New Hope to full, fascinating life. Coming November 4, 2014. Jacket art by David Smit.

The description makes it sound as if Darth Plagueis will be part of the new canon - which would make sense, since Luceno collaborated directly with Lucasfilm for that novel.

Well ... Tarkin isn't a character I'd immediately cheer for news like this. But he is an interesting enough character, and Luceno could make it very interesting.

I have great faith in Luceno so this is extremely good news.

I don't think I'll be reading this. I seem to be in the minority, but I really don't like Luceno's writing. I don't think I could read one more pretentious sentence.

I like some of Luceno's books, but I'm in the very small minority of not liking Darth Plagueis very much. There was a lot of politics in that book, and the way they were done was, well, boring. Doing a book on Tarkin could mean an even more politically oriented book, and I'm not looking forward to that.

However, I do like Tarkin. He's a very interesting character and I'm a big Peter Cushing fan. There is nice potential if this book focuses on Tarkin and Vader's relationship during the Dark Times. They seem pretty chummy in A New Hope. What happened between them during the gap in the films? In a away (especially since Vader is on the cover too) this could be a Tarkin book with a lot of Vader thrown in.

So...I'm trying to remain optimistic. Maybe I'll like this one a whole lot more than I did Darth Plagueis

I know Plagueis had a lot of politics but all the behind the scenes with Plagueis was intriguing to me. Plus the scene where Palpatine goes crazy on his family is one of the most intense things I've ever read.

I wasn't a fan of the end Plagueis because (is this something where people are still worried about spoilers? I dunno) I didn't like him being alive throughout all of TPM. I thought it really took away from Palpatine the Evil Puppetmaster. BUT the first two thirds of the book were incredible! (Well, he has a thing for adjectives and non essential trivial like Zahn has a hatred for vowels unless there are ten in the same word.) But the story was really well structured. I loved all the bits with young Palpatine, and I love that young Palps was a ginger. :p

I said in a different thread, I am excited for the tone of this novel. Since TCW counts to the NewU, it's got to have references to the Citadel episodes. (What if Echo returns in this book? That'd be great!) But a blending of OT and TCW tones would be great!

I loved the Plagueis book, and I think Tarkin is one of the few objectively evil characters in Star Wars. I think this will be a cool exploration.

My guess is that they will use this book as a sort of tie-in to the Rebels show. I fully expect to see Tarkin in the show. And this book, I think, will attempt to get "adult" readers to want to watch the show to see Tarkin (and whatever other characters show up in the book).

Personally, I like politics, so this is the book that I am looking forward to the most.

Yeah, but at the end Palpatine reveals that he's been manipulating Plagueis for a while, which to me made Palpatine an even better Puppetmaster.

It wasn't really clear to me if Palps meant any of that or if it was "Bwahaha I killed you here's a bunch of lies so you feel stupid while you die!!" Palps is a known liar. That wasn't really enough for me to feel better about it. I just pretend the first 2/3 of the book happened and ignore the last third. :p

Well this should be interesting. I'm unsure how excited I am but I like Luceno and they bring him in specifically to clean up and retcon, so I guess its official that they'll be picking and choosing and he'll be the one mopping up the aftermath.

This could go extremely well or it could fall flat and hard.

Until we hear what's the basis of the plot...it's hard to say much of anything.

In the mean time...this is on my "Star Wars - To Read" list. Smile
