Some of you may have noticed that I haven't posted here since early June and sporadically since April.

The reason was simple: after a year and a half of not using my account there since I first registered, I started posting on the TF.N boards. For a while all went well - then I made the mistake of getting tangled up in several threads discussing Christianity. Needless to say, my beliefs were not well recieved by the majority, who kept demanding that I show them scientific proof for God's existence, why the Bible was true, ect. I was shocked at the outright dismissal and hositility toward my posts. I finally wised up and told them it was not worth arguing about it anymore, since no one would change their minds.

Now, however, I no longer feel comfortable there, especially as one thread I started got almost no discussion, just mocking replies before I finally asked for it to be locked. Put simply, TF.N doesn't have the same level of respectful discussion that can be found here. There are disagreements here, yes, but from what I've seen they rarely degenerate into hostility and flaming like TF.N does.

So, I'm back at EUC for good and look forward to posting again!

TFN was always a strange place. There were good times, like how Jason Fry and Dan Wallace used the forums to crowd-source the Essential Atlas and I think the Essential Guide to Warfare too (I'm in the acknowledgements for one of those Very Happy ). But much of it was very hostile too.

I still laugh about how everyone there hated Wookieepedia, but Wookieepedia considered TFN as a "friend".

I gave up on TFN when they moved. They were offline for so long, I just unbookmarked them and never went back.

Yes, I am. But as I said, I shouldn't have let myself get drawn into those threads with those hardened numbskulls and I would prefer not to talk about it here. I admit, as well, that some of my own behavior was less than stellar, but that was my quicksilver temper and frustration talking and I need to learn to curb it.

I just tried using the Ignore function, it's pretty useful. It hides quotes and posts.

After the first of the year, I will be taking a hiatus from EUCantina.

The reasons are this:

1. I need to spend more time actively searching for jobs and scholarships and take responsibility for my life rather than relying on Dad and Mom to take care of everything while I goof off.

2. With all the uncertainty and secrecy swirling around Del Ray/Dark Horse/Episode VII, I'm starting to get burned out on Star Wars. Discussing it just doesn't have the same thrill it did after the Disney buyout was announced last year.

I hope to come back someday, but it may not be until VII is well on it's way to release. It's been a pleasure interacting with all of you!

After another absence of about two years, I'm back (temporarily) at the EUC again.

A lot has happened in that time.

In late 2014, after two years of searching for a part time job with absolutely no luck, my audiologist put us in touch with Vocational Rehabilitation, which is a program here in the States that helps disabled people with finding a job, and sometimes with other services.

February 2015, I got a new pair of hearing aids that I desperately needed, as my previous pair was nearly ten years old, and VR paid for them in full - we didn't have to pay a single cent. That was a relief to my parents, for we didn't have to take out loans to pay for them and add that on top of my SL debt.

Last October, after eighteen months of still no luck with a job, even with VR's help, I finally landed a four month paid internship at the local library where I have always hoped to work, as the first person in a new internship program that VR had just started. At present I have three weeks left until the internship ends, but I have loved every minute of it.

Once the internship ends, I'll be returning to the library as a paid temp replacement from March to early June. The other staff at the library have seen I'm a hard worker and fit right in with them, so they spoke to the director about me being temp hired for the spring, and it was approved last week.

Where I am at the beginning of this year is so different from where I was in January 2016. At that time I deactivated my FB account because I was so tired of seeing my friends happy and settled while I felt like I'd been stuck in a rut for three years and couldn't get anywhere. If it hadn't been for Dad being verbally harsh with me to get me to wake up to reality, I would've stopped job hunting entirely.

I also received an official diagnosis of Asperger's syndrome (or HFA) in August 2015.

Alan,

Welcome back to the EUC...again!

I just saw that this thread was updated today and started reading from the beginning. I at first didn't realize that it was started back in 2013. Funny thing is...I had a very similar experience at TF.N boards.

TF.N was one of the main sites I used for all things SW way back in the 90's. I was on their boards heavily! I even followed them over to their new boards. However, back then I didn't talk about my faith much at all. There wasn't a lot in the old EU that provoked me to discuss my faith, or even faith in general...so there were no problems. But, flash forward about 15 or so years, I've grown in my faith, in my overall Bible knowledge, and my desire to "walk by faith" and waned in my fandom of all things SW. With the announcement of Disney/LFL's "new direction" with SW...in that they too would fall in line with the liberal LBGT agenda by including more (as in, more than the 1 or 2 tertiary characters in Karen Travis' books) gay characters that may even be in the movies. With Aftermath and Wendig's promise to "go further" in Life Debt, I was about ready to just pull the plug on SW altogether. I, too, started a thread on the TF.N boards to discuss the need for such a thing. I essentially asked how other Christian SW fans felt about certain "trends" in SW. I did so without any name calling or anything of the sort, but because I "implied" that the behavior was wrong (notice I said implied, not outright said it, just implied it) I was "perma-banned". And that "implied" statement/comment wasn't even in the original post. It was in a reply to something another poster commented. I actually had several people agree with the initial post, and follow-up posts. I had several PM me about it. But, yeah...perma-ban. In my side-banned conversation with the "moderators" in which I was able to plead my case so to speak, I gave fact after fact after fact and the guy/moderator that banned me just got more and more angry that I could even think that homosexuality was in any way wrong or not normal. I got tired of arguing and just told the guy that I just enjoyed talking SW with other fans and was tired of all of the arguing....then suddenly I was reinstated. Needless to say, I don't really post there much anymore and I avoid anything to even gets close to talking about faith/religion. They are THE most intolerant bunch of folks I've seen in the SW community.

I really like it here because I feel free to discuss my faith and whatever without the threat of being banned. It's always nice, though, to know that other Christians are in the community. Smile

Glad to hear that things are going better for you. My 19 year old son is in college and starting to rack up the student loans too. And, yes, I'm always on him to get a job so he can start paying them down...not to mention gas for the car, maintenance for the car, insurance for the car, oh...and his food to eat (the school he goes too doesn't have a meal plan). My 21 year old daughter...well...she's a different story (long story...not good).

Congratulations, Alan! That's fantastic! I remember you talking about wanting to work at the library. I'm so glad that's working out! And it's wonderful to have you back. Smile
