My personal theory was that Raynar was spared so that a)DN's ending wouldn't be as similar to already planned LotF's, with Jacen dying and b)to prepare way for Jacen's killing: "Raynar lived in similar circumstances, so letting Jacen live would be too similar, we must kill him in the last novel."
But now Jacen is dead, and the EU needs new gruesome deaths. And so the door of Raynar's cell is opened. A role as a target of Daala's propaganda campaign, and a heroic, redeeming death wait.
