I wanted to share this with people, because I think it's awesome.

This week was my wife's birthday. We're the type of people that, if we see something we want, we'll buy it. So there's not much value in normal birthday presents; if she really wanted it, she'd have picked it up already. So we opted for getting each other things we make ourselves. From the heart, creative, and fun.

She made me a puzzle (took a photo from our vacation in Switzerland and had it put on cardboard and jigged out) and a Build-A-Bear (dressed as Darth Vader; she called it Darth Mauler.) Excellent.

So for her birthday: I made a boardgame. Namely, I made Monopoly, but based on her and I.

The properties were all things like the houses where we lived when we met, the towns we've lived, the cities we've vacationed, the places important in our relationship (first date, wedding, honeymoon), the places we've worked, our favourite stores, etc.

Park Place and Boardwalk were the two places we've lived together.

The railroads were based on the usual transportation we take (our car, the train, and the two airlines we fly when visiting family).

The utilities were the local gas and hydro companies.

Houses and Hotels were replaced with Books (each was a picture of covers of books she owns) and bookshelves (pictures of the Ikea bookcases we own).

The property and rent prices and the Chance and Community Chest cards (renamed "New Books" and "Shiny Pretty Things", her term for the gifts she likes lol) came straight from the original game.

And game pieces were pictures held upright with alligator clips (six pieces: her, me, our cat, Padmé, Katniss, and Wolverine).

I had so much fun making the board, and finding pictures, and all that.

I wholeheartedly recommend the practice of making birthday presents. It's fun, it's cheap, and it comes from the heart.

I got the most wonderful feedback from a friend yesterday in regards to my current manuscript. She loved it, and was so kind about it that I saved her texts and will be using them as a motivational tool whenever I feel down about my work.

I got paid for an hour and a half extra while waiting for a sale to finish to I basically got paid to watch A Nightmare on Elm Street, effectively making back the money I spent to see it in theatres.

I got to spend a weekend with my family back home. Namely my sister and her twins (a boy and a girl, 3 years old, and I don't see them enough).

We watched The Land Before Time on VHS. I never realized how sad the start of that movie is! Or the anti-racism message.

The kids got very funny impressions of me. While they remember my wife reading to them, they remember me as being "The Bacon Monster" (because I eat all the bacon) and for stealing their grandfather's bicycle and shoes. Ah, kids Smile
