I was having trouble calling this either good news or bad news, but a conversation with my wife last night (which, side note, confirmed how awesome she is) demonstrates that this is good news.
Marvel is bleeding me dry by producing such awesome stories for me to buy.
I've decided to use Marvel NOW (the relaunch of many ongoing series to bring in new readers) as an opportunity to jump into the comics. I've been reading TPBs from the library, so I do know that I like it. My plan is to preorder series that I think look good. When I pick up the first issue, I make the call as to whether I'll continue buying. Hopefully I can limit to 3-4 really good series. Series I don't care about don't need to be bought, and ones I'm only mildly interested in can be sampled or explored digitally.
So I started with:
1. Uncanny Avengers (a new title featuring a team of X-Men and Avengers)
2. Thor: God of Thunder (featuring young Thor in Viking times, modern Thor, and +1000 years future Thor)
3. All-New X-Men (featuring the original 5 X-Men time-traveling to modern times)
4. Indestructible Hulk (Hulk evades SHIELD at a time when they need him)
5. Captain Marvel (not a relaunch, but the series looked cool and I love Carol Danvers)
Seems reasonable, right?
Then they keep making more announcements of great stories. Add to the original small batch:
6. Savage Wolverine (Wolverine is in the Savage Land fighting dinosaurs)
7. Guardians of the Galaxy (the team from 2008 returns, and I love those 2008 stories)
8. Uncanny X-Men (featuring the team villainous Cyclops re-forms)
And now they've just announced another Wolverine title!
These books are $3.99 a piece (I pay $3.23 because I preorder), and some ship two per month. So it can get expensive. Plus there's all my Star Wars titles (the February 2013 solicitation has 5 titles).
Thankfully, there are numerous well-received series that I do not care about like Deadpool, Iron Man, Fantastic Four, FF, Superior Spider-Man, etc. And other series I'm only slightly interested in (like Avengers or Uncanny X-Force) I might buy digitally when the price drops.
But the good news in the end:
1- Comic books!!!!
2- My wife doesn't care that for February 2013 I'll be buying 14 comic books, most of which cost $3.23. _________________ It was the year of fire… the year of destruction… the year we took back what was ours.
It was the year of rebirth… the year of great sadness… the year of pain… and the year of joy.
It was a new age. It was the end of history. It was the year everything changed.
The year is 2261.
